I'm toying with the idea of turboing the mav but maybe just an upgrade of the camshaft for something with more power and torque will be all it needs. I'm not after a dyno breaking increase just about 50kw.
My questions are:
What cams have people run (with success)?
What sort of characteristics, power/economy/torque & the trade offs?
In the real world, will a higher lift/longer duration profile cam still produce decent low end torque in a TB42?
Will the suggested cam work with the stock carby and gas setup?

You're not going to get an increase of 50kw from a TB42 with a cam swop alone, you would have to rebuild the motor to have 10 to 1 compression or higher, get your head professionally ported, get custom high flowing exractors made, free flowing exhaust. If efi would need to get a tuneable engine management system , if carby you'd need triple webers on a custom intake manifold, all this professionally done will cost more than a turbo install
TB42 came out with around 120kw, 50kw is a big increase for the atmo motor. But with turbo that would be easy.
There's no performance cams available off the shelf, you can get the factory cam reground but this won't give you the duration and lift numbers you'll need for a 50kw increase, you'll need a custom cam made.

Cheers man, I thought that'd be the case but just on the off chance someone had some luck with a "just right" combination that worked, I thought I'd ask the question. I do miss the whistle.

I dont think there is anyone that makes a new cam, you can only get a regrind done. I had mine done by Camshaft Services in Adelaide. I had it reground for LPG. It just has more duration and a slight change in timing. It seems to work well.

We have 2 grinds available, people on here have used them, the larger grind is good for about 15-20 kW on a straight petrol, LPG looses a little. Peak power is at 5000 rpm without any noticable loss of torque low down.

CROWER do a fair range of camshafts for these engines for both N/A and forced inducted engines.
