suspension lift for GQ shorty. How high?

Post by dizzle »

hey everyone. Just after some advice on how high to go on a shorty without to many hassles. I know tailshafts are very short. I was thinking around 3-4 inches? Ive played with hiluxes but am new to coils. What dramas if any can i expect? Who does good kits? What brand? Only wanna run 33x12.5. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

There's a fair jump in price and headaches going from 2-3" to 3-4" or higher.

Do a search on here - i think in the last 6-8 months, there has been about five complete shopping lists and Q&A threads to answer your exact question.

Ok ill have a look for some old posts. If 33s fit standard then i might just stick with a 2 inch lift to save headaches aye.

You can put 2 inch coils under it without changing a thing, not even shocks.

If you put a 3 inch lift in it, new shocks and gearbox spacers are needed and that might get you out of trouble.......

If you go anymore then that you need longer links and shaft spacers etc etc......

Id recommend a 2 - 3 inch coil lift and if you want more put a 2 inch body lift in it......

2" coils and 2" body if you really want to, but the authorities (sp?) take a dim view of lifted trucks up this way .

2in runs good you can get away with three usually aslong as your car looks tidy, it all depends what you want to
achieve with the lift fit 33's on a 2in, but do you still want lots of flex?? or just the room?? cause you can run
longer shock witha superior coil retainer kit and get heaps of travel or knock something up yourself aswell as bump
stops so you dont destroy shocks,

but it comes down to what you want, a 2inch you can get away with 4 coils 4 shocks and a steering dampner for like $700 ish

This is mine with 3in lift and 2in body lift running on 35's. It really stands out in normal traffic. Still not a cop magnet as you might think though.

I've got a 4 inch in mine but wish it was only 2-3 inch lift. For the hassle of fixing the driveline issues you are much better staying with a two inch lift.

Yeah i would love 35s but have been there before with my hilux i had (solid axle conversion, RUF, 35s, supperier leaves in the rear) and got absolutly fingered by the fuzz and dapartment of transport. So i think a 2inch will be the go. I do want some good flex but. What was this coil retainer kit you talk of? Sounds interesting. Who would be the place to see for my gear?

talk to shane from suspension stuff.

he'll get you the right length shocks etc so that you can get the most travel possible without the added height.

He's cheap too and will freight free for most stuff.

Screwy also wants to take out the body lift as it's too high.

I've had 2+2, 7+2, 4+2 and now just the 4 inch spring lift. If it wasn't for the double carden tailshaft and the rotated rear diff I would drop it back to a two inch lift, and I run 37 inch tyres. If you want to run 35's, save all the hassles and stick to the 2 inch lift and trim your guards and it will be perfect.

but on a serious note this was one of my best set ups 33's 2"+2"
Image

i had 4"+2" with 33's ( what a stupid idea  )
Image

then 4"+2" with 38's oh and 2" guard chop ( another stupid idea  )
Image

then went 4" + 2" and 35" (still stupid body lifts suck big time)
Image

Then got rid of the body lift finally so 35's 4" spring
Image

And now im running 38's with 4" spring
Image

Hope this helps to give you an idea ;)

I had 3 inch lift with 33s and no driveline issues, when I went to a 4 inch lift I had heaps of driveline issues and needed to do high pinion rear, this fixed all the driveline issues.
