70 Series Auto Antenna

Post by SimonInAustralia »

I picked up a brand new 70 series auto antenna assembly on ebay for $30 a while ago.

The Toyota EPC says that it comes from these models...
(2001/08-2007/01) HDJ7*..LX
(2007/01-   ) FZJ76,HZJ76
(2007/01-   ) FZJ71,79,VDJ7*..LX

I'd like to replace my HZJ78 manual antenna with this auto antenna, but the factory setup seems a lot more complex than I was expecting.

Hooking up +12V/ground to a 3 pole switch (normal on one pole, reversed on one pole, not connected on the centre pole), and then to the 2 antenna motor wires, should make it work, but I am not sure about the following extra wires and sensor.

Any idea what the Auto Antenna Sensor does in this 80 series wiring diagram (from oldmate in the 80 series auto antenna thread), and how it works?...

Does it sense the antenna height, feeding that back to the antenna motor control relay, so that after it is powered off and the antenna automatically goes down, it can then return to the same height again when powered back on and the antenna goes up again?

Or, when moving the antenna up/down, does it sense when the antenna is fully up, or fully down, so that the antenna motor control relay shuts off the motor to prevent damaging the internals of the motor or to the raising/lowering mechanism?

Or, something else?

I want to make the new 70 series auto antenna operate with an manual up/down switch in my HZJ78, and am not necessarily interested in the auto up/down function that is dependent on the radio being on/off.

The 70 series auto antenna assembly has 6 wires going into it.

I have worked out which are the 2 main wires going to the motor and 1 ground wire going to the body/bracket of the antenna assembly, but there are another 3 wires that look like they are possibly going to some sort of sensor in the middle of the large round part at the bottom of the auto antenna assembly (red/black/green).

I'd like to work out how this sensor operates, if that is what it is, so that I can determine whether or not I need the antenna motor control relay (at $300+ new).

Does anyone have the auto antenna section of the 2001+ 70 series Electrical Wiring Diagram that they could send to me?

Not that it will necessarily help, as the antenna motor control relay and auto antenna sensor are probably shown as just a block like in the 80 series wiring diagram above, with no details on what is going on inside that block, but I'd like to see how it is all wired up.

Also, does anyone have a 70 series antenna up/down switch that they could sell to me?

And, does anyone have a photo of a 70 series antenna up/down switch that they could show to me?

Thanks.
