Looking at upgrading(?) to a TD79 series ute maybe late this year. I'm after ppl's opinions, good & bad, on the ute. engine, box, reliability, etc.
After a few mods she'll be doing the occasional serious/club w/end trips, long tours and the usual running round town. Thinking of a bolt on camper for the tours and the rest of the time using it as a flat tray.

My flat mate has one, they go pretty hard and tow awesome. As far as comfort goes, they are about on par with your 60 series. I am serious, they are the same interior as they started with in 1985. The seat padding is a little thicker and the steering wheel is nicer. The cab is one piece, so you dont have the air leaks, but the rest is honestly the same stuff.

a bloke named Pete has one with SOA in the rear and matching 5" lift in front, 35's, air lockers, 10k# winch, and straight thru exhaust, it looks and goes hard. if you've got the cash they are a nice basis for a fairly hardcore machine but BJ is right, they're not the most comfy machine on the planet.
The suspension for these can be pretty comfortable if set up for your intended weight. The long wheelbase, long rear springs and coil front springs can be made to give a really good ride. But if you plan on having a camper and all your camping gear then take it all off and drive around unladen you will need to compromise on your suspension. A friend has a factory turbo 79 series ute with aftermarket chip (ARB i think) and says it made a huge difference. You might have seen it around - its silver with a great big red box on the back.

After looking at the Candy Camper (i think its called that) the 'empty' weight is approx 350-400kg. Add all the camping gear etc and it'll be still under the tonne (I hope ) Thinking of using a medium duty suspension and adding airbags if it needs it.
