WHAT!!! LOW OR HIGH IN THE SAND???

Post by chiefdog »

low or high in the sand?? been told to leave it in high but to keep the revs up.... but i would rather leave it in low and do 1600 rpm in the td42 gq. i feel it is working less in low at those revs, am i right or not?? I know not to go to 5th as it is an overdrive gear in low but do i make scence?

I'll bite :D

use whatever you need to drive it in to achieve what you want. It will change often as conditions change.

once your in very soft sand you will predominently need low range.

adjusted Tyre pressures are critical in soft sand.

cheers

X2 In very soft sand I have used 2nd and 3rd low and in firmer sand used 2nd, 3rd and 4th high all depends on the conditions.

high is fine if it's an auto. But low will be required if you are taking off in soft sand.

In a manual low is better as taking off in 1st or 2nd low range is alot less work on the clutch primarily, but also the engine. 3rd and 4th low are very close in terms of ratio to 1st and 2nd high range, so unless you will be going faster than 40-50kph, there's not much need to go out of low range.

You'll go faster than that on good sand such as Fraser Island on the east coast. If you're not doing 80 there the tourist busses are passing you.

Yep, I agree.
Unless the sand is hard and packed down, low range is the go. You will fry a clutch quick as a flash if you push through soft stuff in high. ;)

40 is the law on stockton, and it's 20 when you are within so many meters of people.

I believe fraiser island is 80 (but used to be 100?).

Any other beach it's as fast as you want/can go, if there is no posted limit.

It is a factor of how much power you have and how big your tyres are. With turbo upgrade and 33's I solely use high range now, and only even use low-range when the camper is in tow and the going is really soft.

You need to select a gear in which you can keep the tyres turning and not bog down, and that is 2nd high for me at full noise, or 1st high if I don't want to be a hoon.

I would suggest enter the beach in high range 1st or 2nd and if I start to bog down stop and select low range and continue. Places like Fraiser can be largely done with 2wd, there isn't much to worry about other than dickheads and wash-outs.
