Just as an addition to this one- I just got told a really easy way to remove the retainer if you dont have access to a press, and it works. Put the shaft in a soft jaw vice with the backing plate against the benchtop, or the shaft underneath the retainer supported by a block of timber, and then hit the retainer with a cold chisel until theres a 2mm deep cut in the retainer, rotate the shaft 180 degrees and hit the other side till its 2mm deep. then use the "shade tree mechanic" technique described in the link, and the retainer will drop off, then the bearing and backing plate will follow it :D :cool:

can anyone help? i bought some lux diffs complete in housings, old mate i bought them off cannot remember what yr they are, is there anything on them to tell you? they are 4.3 ratios and the rear has a heap of mechanical linkage crap on it for hand brake if that helps cheers

Yes but possibly not now as I'm a newbie. There are quite a number of options from putting a turbo on the diesel to putting a V8 in the hole. Really depends on what you want the vehicle for and how long you want to keep it for. You have options of a turbo 3L which does go nice for a diesel in a 4runner. Petrol 3RZ-FE with a bit of forced induction (costly). V8s Holden, Ford or Toyota(costly)
