what to use for lux brake upgrade
Hey again outers crew.
Im going to upgrade my braking system in the next couple of weeks, and just after some info.
I have a LN65, 86 lux dual cab, 2.4d.
Ive done some searching on lux brake upgrades and found the bits that are commonly used are,
- non abs 80series LC booster + master cyl(1inch bore)
- V6 Surf calipers + slotted discs
From what Ive read, these parts are a bolt on mod.
I have some questions that need answers before I start getting parts.
Do I need a 2 bolt or 4 bolt master cyl??
Im led to beleive that its an easy bolt on conversion, is this true??
What else needs to be done for this conversion??
Thanks

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
The V6 4Runner or after 92 Surf calipers (both are 4x45mm piston) + slotted rotors to suit your rig are bolt on.
Haven't done the rest so can't say for sure.

maybe look at a disc conversion from locktup or similar for the rear?

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
If a comp rig only, yea a locktup kit would work well but if for road use may have problems cause AFAIK it uses hilux front calipers and has no hand brake at the wheel so can't be approved.

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
Daily driven and lots of offroad work, some comps here and there, nothing major.
I was thinking maybe later down the track go larger drums on the rear, possibly disc conversion and trans handbrake. But thats a long while off.
Thanks Dougster, the fact that the discs/calipers bolt straight on is good for me.
Now I just need to know about the master cyl and booster, I know its a non-abs unit from a 80series cruiser,
But do I need 2 or 4 bolt??
Is it a straight bolt on thing too??
Or is there more to it??
I am looking to do this mod in the next week or 2, and need to know what to get.

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
the early 80 booster and master i put on mine was almost bolt on i just had to elongate the bolt holes slightly to bolt it in.
my engineer was happy with the trans handbrake in leiu of a drum type one on the diff as it was more effective than a hilux standard one.(anything would be )
depending on the engineer i cant see it being a problem as patrols have used this style for years(drum though).
i would reccomend using DOT approved braided lines in place of the rubber ones to get a better feel also(thats what i found anyway).

the one i used on my bundy was 4 bolt, and i had to extend the shaft the runs from pedal to booster, about an inch, not sure if will be the same for you tho

Is there anyway I can tell if its a 2 or 4 bolt by looking at it??

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
I know Im getting impatient here but I cant help it.
But someone on here knows the answer Im after.
2bolt or 4bolt master cyl/booster(from 80series) into LN65 lux and how much work it is to fit it.
I might have 1 lined up, but cant go ahead until I know which one I need.
Is there a way I can tell whether mine is 2 or 4 by looking in my engine bay??
Please help.

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
what bolts are you referring too?
the ones to bolt the master to the booster or the ones to bolt the booster to the firewall?
either way, it should be hard to see them

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
Mate, I have no idea where the bolts are.
I just know that there is a 2 bolt unit and a 4 bolt unit.
I dont know what the difference is, I dont know where there go.
I just know I want to get the correct one for my lux.

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
Normally it will be the number of bolts holding the master cylinder to the booster. 2-Bolt are straight forward up/down or either side. 4-Bolt are in a '+' pattern. There is no reason why you couldn't interchange though depending on bolt spacing.
Also I am not sure why you need to replace the master cylinder. I assume it is smaller than the standard Hilux?

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
ya want the early non abs 80 series booster and master i got mine off 3f 80, with drum rear, if going to run disc rear end ya need it from one with disc brakes (disc brakes require more fluid than drums)
they are 4 bolt on the front and 4 bolt on the rear, both square
part number for the master i used is JB1879 looks like this
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Toyota-LANDCRUIS ... 0452664551
keep in mind this was done on a bundy, most likely the same for hilux, but no guarantee

All I know is there is a 2 bolt and a 4 bolt version. Apparently, the lux bore is 13/14in or something, and the 80 bore is 1in.
I just need to know which one is the correct one for my LN65 lux, so I can tell my mate at the wreckers, then he can get me the parts, then I can do the job knowing I have the correct parts.
I already know about the calipers/rotors, they are a straight swap on my lux.
Im just waiting for an answer on the master/booster.

Get a surf booster and master cylinder. I'm sure they are 1" master cylinder. Disk front, drum rear.

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
I made some phone calls today, and the guy I spoke to told me that the early 80s had disc front/drum rear, and the 95 and later model 80s had disc front and rear.
The disc front and rear models had the 2 bolt master cyl/booster.
The disc front/drum rear models haad the 4 bolt master cyl/booster.
I just thought Id post this up so in case some1 ever searches for info on this.
Thanks for the help peoples.
Oh yeah, what model lux has larger drums on the rear, that I can bolt straight onto my rear axle housing??

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
Yeh any surf , Hilux or 4 runner with IFS will have the larger drum brakes and will fit on the earlier hilux rear axles. Same bearings etc. I've got a later model 80 series brake booster and 1" master cylinder on mine and looks the same as the surf one I've got sitting on my shelf. Maybe the ports on the master cylinder maybe pointing in differnet directions but that's it.
Plenty of Surfs laying around. Plus this is what you want to do anyway. Put the larger front brakes on (From surf) and put the larger rear brakes on (From surf) so why not put the Brake booster and master cylinder that was designed for this brake setup. Once again From a SURF.

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
the larger rear drum brakes are on ANY 4wd IFS front lux.
Thats the brakes that will fit, the axles will not as they are 1inch longer both sides.
Have you tested your vaccuum pump?
You do realise thats what creates the suction for your power brake booster.
If the internals have worn out in your pump, then you will have dodgy brakes.
Is a cheaper option than spending money on upgrading brakes.
Why are your brakes so dodgy?
I have standard lux brakes and can lock them up on the bitumen no problemo.
Mines a fair bit heavier than your rig as well.
You do realise that the accelerator cable has to be modified to fit an 80 series or surf power brake booster?
As they are a larger diameter unit overall and toyota put the accelerator cable 1cm off the stock booster as it is.
I know this as I have a surf power brake booster which is 1inch bore.
Have to modify all the brake lines from the booster as well.
Why not rebuild the ones you have now, machine the rotors and drums, new pads and shoes and bleed the brakes properly.
I remember you having issues doing that.

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
I had no problem fitting my brake booster. And all you have to do with the brake lines is to rebend them it fit the ports which maybe in a different position. It's not all that hard.
Or you could go Disc alround.

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
When I did the engine conversion in my lux, I had a surf power brake booster sitting there that I was going to fit as I thought more volume output = better brakes?
But It didn't fit as it bent the accelerator cable too much to sit flush against the firewall.

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
Hi mate i have done a rear disc brake conversion on mine using subaru calipers,i was told i had to change booster and master cylinder i have got a 90 model RN 105 with a ecotec motor and auto (originally 2.4 petrol 5 speed) ,i checked mine first,it had 15/16 on the side of the master cylinder (check) this is the 1 INCH master, standard 4 piston callipers at the front with vented disc standard as well.Apparently diesel luxs come out with this master and some petrols as well i did not change any thing apart from the brake lines at the back, and calliper brackets of course and it stops on a dime
Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
Well that all sounds good then. It also makes alot of sense too, Surf front disc brakes, Surf rear drum brakes, and Surf master cyl and booster.
What model should I be looking to get bits off??
And you say the Surf master/booster bolts straight on??
Thanks for the info all.

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
Now Im starting to get confused.
I spoke to a guy that sells alot of early lux/4runner bits on ebay today. He told me that the Surf master/booster has a larger outside diameter and will rub on the steering, as hes done the same conversion.
He said the same as most in this thread regarding the front and rear brakes though, V6 Surf caliper/vented discs for the front and IFS 4runner/Lux drums on the rear.
But he mentioned about the Surf master being larger on the outside.
So now Im thinking about going back to original plan of using the 80s master and booster.
Im think Ill just upgrade the front discs/calipers amd the rear drums, then, if I need to, upgrade to an early 80s master cyl and booster.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Hi mate,
I used vented discs off an 84 fj landcruiser cost me 100 bucks brand new, the master cylinder is from a troopie from the late 80s 1 inch bore, and the callipers are 92 v6 4runner, all bolted straight up, if you are wondering about 2 or 4 bolt simply unbolt the one thats on there,it will have 2 or 4 to get it off!! the only mod was to bend one piece of brake line to match up to the m/c fitting but honestly was easy as .hope that helps.

Re: what to use for lux brake upgrade
The 80 booster is bigger than the Surf booster, so if you can't fit in the surf booster there is no way the 80 will fit in there.DUDELUX wrote:So now Im thinking about going back to original plan of using the 80s master and booster.
Measure the size of your booster + the room around it and get your mate to measure both the Surf & 80 booster.
BTW, the Surf master has the lines entering it from the guard side (which is the opposite of most Lux) as the turbo sits next to it on a 2LT/E surf and the brake lines would get too hot.
I have my old master here 15/16 which I swapped out for a new 1" from a later model lux. Not worth the $$$'s IMO as brakes didn't seem any different.
