hay guys i got defected in on the weekend. i live in qld and got picked up by the transport dep running 6'' lift and 35'' tyres on my gu patrol wagon. i have to change it back to legal which is 40mm lift according to them. In some time i was thinkin of running a 3'' lift (which is still over but not by much). i was wondering if i have to run drop boxes or other castor correction on a 3'' lift?? was hoping to use my 6'' shocks with 3'' lift to still have same amount of travel but not sure if they will fit under there??? anyone one got any sugestions ??? will 3'' still look to big and attract attention?? Sorry to hear about you getting defected; did they major defect or minor? like did they put it off the road? ETC

And by the way it will depend on what 3" springs you get (I would get Flexy's) and also your Shock Lengths!

I my experience, my 04 gu ute has an approved 50mm body lift which was inspected by the woodridge transport dept over the pits'
At the time it was fitted with a heavy duty 2" set of springs, which is 3" - no problems. This was about 3 years ago.
I was running all the standard arms and had no problems

didnt get a fine or points!!! they went pretty easy on me.
the box was marked major but didnt say i couldnt drive it. they say i dont have to take it over the pits. only have to get a mechanic to sign off on list of things to change. i have 6'' flexy coils now and prob get 3'' ones.

3 inch lift in a GU doesn't look overly large however as they told you it is still illegal. The technical measurement of allowable lift is 1/3 of the bump stop clearence more than the standard measurement, So about 40mm would be correct. You would be pretty unlucky to get pulled up for a 3" lift though if the rest of your truck is nice and your not doing anything stupid in it. As for running 6 inch shocks under 3 inch springs it is possible however other modifications are required to make it work such as drop out cones and adjusted bump stop clearences as that much travel will allow the springs to fall out under articulation.

As said earlier the choice of springs for the job will make a big difference aswell. Flexycoils are fairly long compared to the average so they may allow for less modifications elsewhere.

same thing happened to a mate of mine. when he got pulled up he just played dumb, even tho any knob would know its bigger then heavy duty thats just what he said. they tried explaining the rules about that 1/3 bump stop height and he just said that he rung nissan and they didnt have an actual measurement. anyway long story short he got off with his lift as they couldnt prove anything for some reason and the only thing he got done for was 35's and smashed rear tail light

i think coil sprung cars are a lot easier to get away with cause i used to have a hilux with all the gear, shackles and ladder bars etc and they knew that stuff like the back of their hand.

anyways im not saying be a d*ck about it and be rude to them but there must be ways around it.

This dose not apply to a patrol or landcruser or any Live axle four wheel drive. What thay meen here is a up and down travel bump stops in a IFS vehical, in a live axle vehical the shock is the down travel "bump stop". My self and the old man have recantly been through all this in his cruiser, whith a 2'' lift and 33'' the truck is set up to tow a caravan but still be capable, and it is very well looked after.

He got defected for -
- Lift to big ( 2" efs coils )
- 33''x12.5x15
- Tail ligts ( thay were clear )
- GPS on windscrean
- two gauges on the A-pilar (right down the bottem were the dash meats the pilar)
- mud flaps to short ( 4x4 flaps Max 300mm from ground when unloaded )
- thay also tryed to get him for having a draw system in the back ( removing the 3rd row seats, thay were uncliped like all 80seires can do.

That totaled 3 points and $600 in fines.

If thay want thay can do you for what ever that want, when we were trying to fix it all to get signd off on we rang 3 defrent trasport offices and got 3 diffrent awnsers, makes it hard when trying to do the right thing.

I run a 3" lift on my GU Patrol, never had an issue. I keep it nice and clean and it's running 285 all terrains so looks almost stock..until you stand next to it

I run 3 degree castor in the front with this lift as well, steering is beautiful.

Had to get a mod plate for an MQ wagon goin from 7 seater to 5 seater
So technically if its not mod plated then its not right
Clear lights arent right either
Do 33s fall under the legal requirements also ???

The problem i see regarding these mods that people do,
Is they jackem up high, huge rubber and basically look for the
"wow,look at me attitude"
And wonder why 4x4s are the "big"targets ATM

Yes I think seating needs to be cover by mod plates and tyres u can not increase or decrease tyre diameter by more than 15 mm. It's a shame there is nothing up here in qld like what the other states have got, the ability to get your vehicle engineered To make basicly any modification legal. If any one would like to share there experiences with us it wold be great.

I got defected bad in my previous truck few years ago . there are ways around the system. If you get defected serverly where you have 28 days or so to bring vehicle into transport do not bring it in. Cancel the current registration on the vehicle with in the 28 days, when you cancel registration it cancels any defects lingering on that vehicle as they only go on rego not vin no. etc, where if they keep catching you time and time again running the same gear, you will be digging yourself a hole, my mate that works at transport told me this and it worked for me. Cancel rego, put truck back to standard for another rwc , get it registered again and put all your running gear in again its alot of mucking around but if your unlucky to get caught its a must. and yes cab lifts can be mod plated by transport upto 2inch, cheers

That maybe the way to go. What happens if get caught multiple times under the same rego? Do they impound your car ?
I bought a gq patrol with 5 " lift and droped it to get rwc, but when I took it in to trans dep to reg it they said that had been defected and was serposed to be taken in to the pits'. And were considering making me still take it in even tho I just bought it. So they must have some record ?

Not acording to Toyota, and a engener, because the mounts were left there ( thay unclip via a quick relese ) thay can't, Shoudn't defect you for it, but because the bloke just looked in the back and didn't look for the mounts he just filled out the ticket. Whats funny is my uncle got pulled over at the same stop, ( 79 seires, 2" lift 33" GPS on the windscren and a gauge on the a-pilar ) the blokes checked his lights all worked and that was it.

So how can thay say one car is a unsafe car and the next one is fine?

One thing that one officer said that ( no bull hear, this is what he said to me on the phone ) if he wanted to he could put a brand new car off the road with defects, so i guess it dosn't mater what you drive or how you drive it if your in the southeast Queensland we are all up that creek with out a padle.

Some of the rules/defects are BS
Ive heard of people getting done because the taillights in the rear panels of a GQ didnt work
(They dont work from factory)
Hence why people are floggin the wiring kits to hook them up

Yeah,

Heresay, but I believe the defects are recorded against the VIN and not the rego plate these days anyway to close this old loophole. As Custom Built discovered a few posts ago.

When you cancel rego on a vehicle you do get rehinburst the left over from transport. So Im not sure what you mean ( at a loss) . Obvious if your running this gear from day one your running a risk of getting caught. I think there is some confusion as to "defect" I'm not talking about when pigs pull you up and give you a fine for large tyres and tyres hanging outside guards or whatever, Im talking about when they may give you a fine and give you a certain amount of time to bring vehicle into a inspection station commonly known as transport pit. I have been in this situation and it worked. If a cop simply fines you for a defect and you are just given a fine well be greatful and the end of the day the laws have not been tested adequatly. Each vehicle make should be takin into consideration by weight, width and length. example a4in lift patrol would be more safe than say a hilux with a 4inch lift, due to weight and width of vehicle. The laws aren't right and its good to see more and more modified trucks out there on the road I reckon so i blend in more with the rest of you driving defective vehicles

Yes if you cancel your rego you do get reimbused
BUT
Not the total amount
Next time you pay your rego,wait a week then ask what you get back if you cancelled it !!!
Im sure after a certain period the insurance amount is lost
If you calculated your rego buy 365 days and you want to cancell at say 200 days left
You dont get 200 days worth back,if ya know what i mean
So thats a loss
Then a new road worthy (more cost)
The convert back to stock (time = money)more loss
You get the picture
There is already a uniform lifting rule
Isnt it 1/3 increase in bump stop diastance ???
So that would work for all makes and models

so you'll put 3" coils in and then run 31" tyres? Because yo wont be able to run 35s

hopefully grimbo, the plan is to run 3" coils with 6 " shocks hence same wheel travel . i will run 31s on the road and 35s when i go offroad. 3" lift should still fit 35s.

i have a 2006 gu ute and run 35s with a 2.5 inch lift i have a steal tray and toolboxes in the back so it sags a bit everyone i know thinks the 35s look way smaller on this car than they did on my 7 inch lifted gq they all think im running 33s.
3 inch lift is heaps to run 35s i have no problems and my car is way more stable in the bush not to mention on the road. you may have to pull mudflaps off front guard to clear turning on articulation but that is it. i run 7 inch procomps in the rear of mine with 2.5 inch springs u will need to retain your coils at the base with a bit of steel plate and get drop out cones for the top of the spring also dont froget to get extended brake lines, if you where running 6 inch u should already have them and i have no castor corection and mine drives fine, just depends on the springs you have.
