td42 turbo sizing

Post by sld86 »

Running a schwitzer turbo on my gq at the moment and it has done the oil seals again after only getting a rebuild 10,000ks ago.

My Q. is ive been offered a hypergear turbo (not a ball bearing) but its equivalent in size to a gt3071. Are these a suitable size turbo or are they to big or small to run on a td42

Heres a link to the turbo specs

I run a Garret GT2860rs which is around the same size as the one you have listed. Mine is a Genuine Garret so going by the sizing of the turbo you are looking at I think it would be around the same, As for the quality of the turbo I couldn't tell you as I have never had anything to do with them. My Gt28 runs a .6 rear housing with an optional .8, I find the .6 very responsive down low, makes power around 1500rpm max boost by 1800-2000rpm. I would think that turbo would be the same, If you are after more power than the bigger housing would be better.

As for the turbo you are looking at, If reliability is your complaint I would suggest running a Garrett or similiar as cheaper turbo's tend not to be as reliable.

Just a note on the side you will probably find unless you run the turbo your kit is designed for you made need new lines/pipes/ hoses etc to make it work also.

I hope that helps

gudday

the GT3071R is in my truck and unless you have some serious mods don't use it,..... it'll be a lag monster!
The 2860 is very different in size to the 3071 and works well in a unmodified TD42 (as said above)

if you want to get it from the horses mouth go to the Garret site and check the sizing table.....the 3071 is at the extreme end of it and that's BB not bushed also.

good luck
