Another TURBO question
Another TURBO question
Felt bad bout hijackin someone elses thread. And decided to ask my OWN question.
There is a pair of Garrett M24 turbos - off a GU 3 litre turbo diesel for sale at a reasonaqble price.
My question. Would this turbo be enough for the 4.2 ?? or even a pair of them??
Or am i wasting my time?

theres two ways of lookin at it, so here goes
if you do mostly highway driving a bigger turbo will be more advantageous to you.
if you wheel and want more grunt low down a smaller turbo winds up qicker giving you the boost at lower revs - which is what you want.
so its not a case of to small a turbo, just at what revs you will get the boost
if the garrets are a good price i would get both of em. put one on you vehicle and sell the other one.

Thanks for the response.
How does havin a pair of them work??
Or would there be no room in the engine bay for them.
Im chasing down low down torque and boost. I have long been thinkin a supercharger.. but 7k to do it is a turn off.
To make things simple... i have 36 swampers and 4.6 gearing. with a 4.2 which is being rebuilt asap and would like to see what options i have with the engine b4 it goes in the GQ.

I know what you mean about the different types of turbos.
I drove two different gq's with two different turbo set ups and the difference was very apparent.
One was a shwitzer with only about 8psi with no muffler. The boost came on early and was quite nice to drive with a nice wistle. Would probably run out of legs a little earlier but.
The one I have now is an old safari intercooled set up with a muffler and while it goes very well especially on the highway I think it doesn't have the low down boost. It will be much harder offroad with this set up. On road it goes like shit off a shovel once you give it some. There is no where near the amount of wistle either but this may be because of the muffler among other things.
If it where me I would lap up the lower boost rpm and sacrifice the top end. It is a 4wd afterall and a bloody big one at that. We don't need huge top ends.

The actual turbo is most likly made by the same mob that does the td42t which is garret isnt it. It's just the 3lt turbo's are a tad smaller. And I dont think any of the actual turbo's have blown. But have heard that some have needed new bearings before they should have, but that may have been due to the engine dieing that has caused the turbo to go also.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
