Turbo 2L Dramas

Post by towmater »

G'day guys,
I've just put a 2nd hand Turbo Dynamics turbo kit on my 2L powered lux and i'm having a few dramas.

After fitting the kit and setting everything on the dyno i noticed a heap of blue smoke following me down the road. So i pulled the turbo off again and took it into a turbo specialist. Turns out the turbo is rooted and its gonna cost me $1500 bucks to fix. I can get a CT20 brand new for $400 but i'm not 100% sure if it's the same as the schwitzer that came with the kit.

Anyone else have this kit and know if the schwitzer and ct20 are interchangable?

cheers

ct20 is a totally different turbo to the schwitzer.
pretty sure schwitzer is a ball bearing while ct20 is a brass bearing.
ct20 will have a different manifold flange, compare the two turbos and see whats different.
So the oil seals have gone in the turbo then.
Not hard to change at all, as they are only o-rings.

The Schwitzer is not ball bearing.
I got my old one rebuilt for $1000, with a new actuator too.

Sorry, can't help on the flange patterns.

thanks for the replies guys,
wish it was just the oil seals, the fins are knackered and so are the bearings unfortunately. I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and fork out to have it fixed, least that way it should be sweet for a fair while! been warned out on cheap ct turbos, apparently just coz they say toyota doesn't mean they're not cheap chinese copies.

1400 seems quiet steep for a simple rebuild, i could understand 1400 if it were to be highflowed etc, id get a few more quotes, even if you have to post the turbo somewhere.

the diesel specialist near me does turbo rebuilds for $750, for $1400 you could easily buy a brand new schwitzer turbo.
