Turning up FUEL + BOOST on "02" TD hilux

Sorry I dont no the name of engine but im sure someone will.

Its my mates car and we've just installed a boost controller.
I have wound the boost up from 10psi to 15psi but i dont think the fuel is compensating.
Will the boost compensator only adjust to a set maximum? therefore do i have to turn up the fuel a bit?
OR will the compensator adjust to the extra boost on its own?

I ask this because there doesnt seem to be a large power gain with the extra boost and seems to have a hole after 10psi.

Is it safe to slightly adjust the fuel without a EGT guage?

If it's the factory turbo diesel it is a 1kz-te.

As far as I'm aware the ecu will go into safe mode at 14psi boost so 15psi may be too much?

I've turned my boost from factory 9-10psi up to 13psi and added a dtronic chip to fix the low fueling dramas.

I'm not sure if it is possible to manually adjust the fueling on the engine due to it all being electronic.

If your mate still has stock dump pipe and exhaust on then that is most likely to be the cause of lack of power higher in the rev range as the factory cast iron dump is incredibly restrictive.

Another way to get a little more go out of the engine is to block the EGR line as well.

I have an EGT gauge on my engine and day to day driving with the above modifications (except for exhaust which is on the to-do list) I haven't notice a huge difference in exhaust temperatures. Although if you are towing, or do a lot of driving in soft sand etc it would be advisable to get one as the temperature can rise quite quickly when the engine is working hard.

Hard to say without knowing the engine. If it's the factory 1kz-te then it's electronically controlled, and the way to get more power is via a diesel power 'chip' which is a piggy back on the ecu. It's the same story with the 5L-E which is in some hilux/hiaces i believe. If it's a 3L or 5L with a mechanical pump and aftermarket turbo setup, then the way to more power is by a screw on the pump (simple).

You are right in that the boost compensator only reduces the volume of fuel, when the volume of air decreases. It's an emissions thing, but also to protect the engine.

check the vin plate, it will say what engine it is.

You should definately have an egt guage.

The engine is factor standard, so it must be the 1kz-te.
Does this engine come in manual injector (1kz-t)??

I thought that the earlier model with that engine may have?

It does have the standard exhaust, If it is the 1kz-te then the only option to wind up the fuel is with a chip?

Price on the chip?

I don't think factory turbo diesel engines were an option on 1990's hiluxes in Australia. I believe there is a 1kz-t, but probably not readily available. Maybe in an imported Surf of similar vintage. Plus the effort and dollars to swap a pump over would be similar to buying a dp chip

Yes the only option i'm aware of is the chip. dp chips make them, but i'm pretty sure they'll be 1000 bucks or more.

Thanks mate, Just talked to my mate that owns the car and apparently hes already looked into the chips and are around 1.5k.
Apparently the makers of the chip are advertising 30% power gains without changing the boost?
I fail to see how this is possible.. Either way it seems a bit steep.

chips are expensive, i was fortunate enough to pick mine up 2nd hand for less than half price.

I don't know if I would say it makes a 30% difference but you can definitely tell it's there.

taking off with the 1kz-te was nowhere near as quick as my mates 5L-t (aftermarket turbo) purely because with a mechanical injection pump his puts in more fuel in the lower revs and as a result makes more low end power. As far as I can tell the 1kz-te under-fuels until close to 2500rpm to save on emissions or something?

the addition of a chip gave me plenty of power from idle which makes driving around town a lot better.

there was a 1kz-t made but I've only heard of it being available in imports such as surfs and 70 series prados etc.
