GQ TB42 alternator advice??
hi all,
My 1989 GQ's alternator has died, and needs to be replaced. I was going to replace it but a friend recommended i get a more powerful one as i plan to run
some spotties when i get my Bull bar put on. Also might run lights on roof. Anyways my options are...
1) Get current alternator reconditioned for $100.
2) Buy a more powerful alternator ....$ ???
3) Have been told GU alternator might fit??
4) Get 24v alternator.
Im sure most of you guys have replaced this, so any advice would be appreciated, also a ruff idea on price would be good as that will determine
what path i most likely take.
Also if i get different alternator or more powerful....where can i source it??

cheapst way to go would be to just reco the one you have. i just replased the one in my 95 gq and it cost $450 from repco but i had to pay that because i was 10 hours from home and needed it. power wise just with the standed one would be fine i run 6 lightforce driving lights on mine with no probs run 2 engles when we go away uhf winch ect ect

I took my old hitachi standard alternator to an auto elec and he replaced it for a bosch 75 amp for around $150. He had to take the dual belt pulley of my old alternator though and i rewired the plug to suit.

you can get a ef/el (maybe au, im not 100% on which model) falcon alternator to fit with a little bit of effort...they are 100-110A from memory...cheap and easily available.

the later efi alternators also make more grunt.
and the other day i saw 110 amp ones ready to go on ebay... cant remember the price....

gu will bolt in, but its a hitachi, go a bosch, the one you want is the el ex chaser (but dont tell the wrecker that, they will charge you more) but thats the 110A version, and its a bosch, only needs the mount to be ground out a little, poss 10 mins of work, and its a plug in job

Does the EL have to be ex-chaser?? I found an EL alternator which is 100amp and the guy said he'll give it to me for $50. What did you mean

I want to buy it if it suits me but dont want to waste $50 for nothing, especially when i can rebuild mine for $100. But i would like the
more powerful alternator.....

once u pull your gq one out you will see the lower mount is wider on the gq then the ford

So I gather all thats needed to fit the EL unit is to replace pulleys and grind mount to fit. Anything else required?
