Body substitutions in QLD ?

Post by 5inchgq »

So I've been thinking about swapping my GQ body off the chassis and installing a G60 body just for something different, I spoke to the guy that does all my blue plates today and he said don't bother the body mounts are all different I told him "I know" but can it legally be done ? he said yes then failed to elaborate which makes me think that it is more drama than it's worth has anyone here had or done this in QLD and could offer some advice ?

Wouldnt it come under the rebody rulings ???
The G60 body would have to comply with the GQ legalities
IE
If the GQ has side intrusion bars in doors, colapsible column,3 speed wipers ect ect
These would have to be fitted to the G60 body
Thats i how i would see it
Could be wrong tho

This what I thought but my mod plate guy said that mounting the body would require new mounts on the chassis and I asked if the body/floor/mounting points be changed meaning the chassis would be unmodded and he said it would still require engineering ??? I was under the impression that a body substitution could be done without an engineer involved ???

Unless the body bolts straight on with no mods then yes it will need an Engineers Cert for the chassie and body mods done to mount it. The body will also need to meet all adr requirments of the chassie you are fitting it to.

I fitted an 87 model hilux cab to a 96 chassie and could not get it approved because the 87 cab did not meet the same ADRs as the 96. Had I fitted a 96 cab to an 87 chassie it would have been no issue at all.

Having said that. This was 7 years ago so things may have changed.

I have a feeling it needs to be passed as an ICV now.
There was a zook on a bundera chassis that went down this path

cheers bru

I have spoken to my Engineer as I will be putting an '84 40 series body on an '86 MWB 73 chassis. I have been given the all clear.
I am guessing on how close the age of the 2 vehicles are, makes mine easier.

Phill Scott is a mobile engineer out of south casino, he did my Daihatsu Scat on a fourrunner chassis with commadore motor & then later a feroza cab cut down & on the same chassis.
he said that it has to be set up as the vehicles/modles useing eg if either had come out with air bags, than the new thing your building must have air bags ect ect. We even looked at the ICV rulings but that line was even harder as it had to be compliant with vehicles of its weight/criteria at the date of the new build (basicly would mean whatever is in a 21-7-2010 nissan patrol wagon would have to be, air bags, abs ect)
Re-boddied was alot less complicated. mine was engineered & registered as a modified 4WD with the body shape of 1980 Daihatsu ute (it used to confuse the shit out of cops) but everything was done & with his engineer pics attached, from the welds to the chassis mods, the coil diff conversion, break booster & break upgrade for the larger engine capasity & 33" tyres, the new fule management system & long range tank (going from dsl to pet) engine emission & noise, changing seating capasity (from fourrunner to scat ute) upgraded seats ect ect , it wasnt cheap at about $2500 in total, but it passed & the cops would let me go after reading the paperwork. I was only picked up for 1 thing & that was I changed up to 35"tyres as soon as it was registered, & the cop got me for them. That was a while ago, things may have changed.

cheers piggy

Yeah he said the inbuilt 'crumple zones' and side intrusion etc in the earlier body would not comply with the ADR's that apply to the 1989 chassis so it can't be done. Interestingly he said that I could put a later model body on an earlier chassis eg GQ body on a G60 chassis.

Sorry mate for not getting back to you.
I will chase up the details today.

Although what Paul has stated sounds right as I have heard that before. As I said earlier mine seems to be easier due to age similarities in models so ADR's are basically the same.
