timing belt gone on 2L-T is it ok?
the timing belt went on our 84 hilux, what happened was the car just stalled so we pulled off the road tried to start it again and heard the starter goin off really fast so initally thought the timing is gone, there was no noises the the motor seems to be really free can it be stuffed? is it possible for a diesel to just be timed again or will i need a rebuild? thanks
Re: timing belt gone on 2L-T is it ok?
THe only way you can simply replace a broken belt and be on your way again is if you're the luckiest man alive.
When the timing goes out, the pistons can smash into the valves. But If the motor can still turn over freely, then that's a positive sign. I did read somewhere that someone with a 2L had a belt let go and although the pistons smacked the valves, because it was the old rocker arm setup it just knocked the valve clearance out so he replaced the belt, reset the clearance and was fine.
I think though that the 2L-T had the later overhead cam shim and bucket setup in which case the chance of walking away unscathed I think is a fair bit less.
Not going to know for sure until you try though

Pretty much all diesel toyota's are interference engines due to the compression of a diesel.
most petrol toyota's on the other hand are non interference engines.
