Charging issues on my ol 60

Post by dexter09 »

Hi, ive been having some major issues with charging in my 60 series 2H diesel

its just stooped charging, i replaced the internal regulator and brushes and ran over my slip rings with some emery paper and checked all the ignition power feeds to the alternator.

i then got fed up and bought a brand new aftermarket alternator and fitted it, but the only one i could find that was cheapish was one for an external regulator. so i purchased an external reg too. i wired it up using my mates sixty and a multimeter to determain the wires. and now theres still no charge!!!!
does anyone have any ideas on wot i should do next? im at my witts end!!!!

What info have you got for the alternator and regulator?

ie brand, model etc

Do you have to keep the externally regulated one or is it possible to return it for a good one?
This is not legal advice.

the externally regulated alternator was the only one they had, and it was 280 bucks alot better than the 550 i was told for an internally regulated one at a different business. im not sure wot brand the alternator is, it dosnt seem to have any brand written on it, but the regulator is a standard toyota one from a sixty series in the wreckers. when it didnt work i also fitted the one from my mates sixty as i knew it was definately working and still no luck

Dud battery????

If that isn't up to scratch the alt can't pump charge into it.

At least have the batt checked to remove it as a possibility. Check your batt-eng earth strap too for corrosion (use jumper lead for "proof of concept"), you may only be trickling in charge by the body earth and any fine earth cables to the body-chassis-eng.

ive checked all the fuses and fusable links now and still nothing, i also tested the output at the alternator not the battery and its not even charging at all its just showing the exact same voltage as the battery even while running and revs bourght up to 1500. and ive checked the 10,000 grounds from the motor to batt and bat to body x2 and bat to bellhousing and bell housing to chassis and they all seem to be fine.

now the alt has four cables that run into it, white with black stripe, black, white and yellow.

the white with black and black appear to be grounds and the white and yellow appear to be pos

i have the yellow hooked up to ign and the white up to the sensor wire.

and the black and white with black stripe both to grounds that are coming out of the regulator.

does this sound correct to you guys?
