I have been chasing a noise in the rear of my wagon now for a while and gave up for a bit but it is getting louder. The noise is like a rumble in a grrr grrr grrr grrr sort of pattern. It is heard most at 90ks and gets softer at 100ks. Its enough to send me nuts.
Today I pulled the rear axles out in a desperate attempt to find this noise and looked at the rear wheel bearings. If I stand the axle up on its studs and spin the housing it makes a noise , as the mrs described it "sounds like a scourer on a pot". The grease from the bearings was inside the axle housing aswell, more on one side than the other. Its not very loud but I would have thought it would be pretty silent. I sat there spinning them both and they both sound a little different, but the same if that makes sense. Every now and then the mrs reckons it sounded like there was sand inside or something? I went to the local 4by shop and they laughed at me when I said I think it may be the rear bearings, and they said they just dont fail???
Should they be like that? Could this be my problem?

The last time I spun my rear bearings there was no sound whatsoever.

But I have to agree with what the shop said, they don't fail
Mine have never been replaced as far as I know (315000k) and they run on diff oil as my inner oil seals are busted...... They're still top, no play/noise at all. Usually they last "forever" but it shouldn't be that much of a job/cost to replace them, I'd give it a go and see?

Thanks for the reply AJ. I know they are known to be bulletproof but doesnt mean they cant go. They have no play in them and arent noisy at all untill about 70kmh (if that is what the noise is). I had a look on ebay and they are like $150 a side plus then I will need to get them pressed out. Just need to justify spending the dosh so the MRS doesnt flip it.

I've been in the bearing game for 30 years and 2 things I can tell you from that.
A/. You cannot tell if a bearing is failing by just spinning, unless it is absolutely stuffed it has to be under load to hear any noise. Makes sense when you think about it, it's normally making noise when it has about 2 ton sitting on it and being driven at the same time.
B/. True, Nissan bearings do'nt fail very often but every now and then it happens. I've owned 3 Patrols in the past 12 years and done the Rear wheel Bearings twice. (If I'd owned Toymota's it would be 12 times in 3 Cars).
The sounds your describing do possibly sound like bearings, probably worth changing anyway, after all you'll only have to do it once. Buy them from a bearing company, it will probably be cheaper.

Cheers Maverick. I am going to hope its the bearings and just change them. Any idea on cost from a bearing comany off the top of your head and any brands to get or steer clear of?

check that the cap/dust seal on the pinion nut is tight and not spinning and making that noise. (where the tailshaft bolts to diff centre)
mine did the same thing but randomly and its a very annoying noise exactly like u have explained. i changed my bearing just for the hell of it once i had it all apart, but prob not worth it. Check that before u go any further.

Not sure of a cost off the top of my head, I do know they have actually come down in price over the last few years. I will have a look in the morning and try and post something around lunchtime.
There are really only 2 manufacturers that make the Rear Bearings, NTN or Koyo, If the bearing is not made by either of these 2 steer clear, their probably chinese.
Where abouts in Sydney are you, I might be able to organise something.

Just had a look and $150.00 off ebay is'nt to bad, best I can do is a kit for about $140.00 per wheel, unfortunately there's not a lot of stock around but I can get a couple of kits.
Like I said if you buy off ebay just ask what brand the bearings are!

Thanks for the info Dave. Im no longer in Sydney moved down south a while ago and havent updated yet.
It has to be the bearings. The diff was just pulled out and new bearings in that, the tailshaft has had new unis and rebalanced twice and the pinion angle is spot on, the gearbox was rebuilt just before xmas and none of these changed the noise at all.
I think I just have to do it and see.
