I had a look around and couldn't find the info i'm after so thought i'd post up.

I have a 1999 2.8L gu wagon and i'm looking at getting a newer 4.8L gu so i was wondering if i could swap the whole front and rear diff centers with the air lockers still in them and put them staight into the 4.8L?

As far as I know they will bolt in but the ratios won't be the same.

You will need to swap the pinion flanges - i think

This is correct and I should have thought of this my self :oops: as I recently had a pinion flange changed on a GU centre that I have.

Or you could keep the 2.8ltr ratios (4.6) and run some 35" or 37" tyres to compensate :armsup:

The flange on the front centre (this I know because this is the flange I had changed) won't fit the flange on the tailshaft from the bigger engine. Having met kurt he is already running 35's. ;)

don't the 4.8's have the h260 rear diff????

This would mean that the rear ratio's can't be changed

4.6 can be the wrong ratio for 4.8s as some run 3.5:1 so upgrading to 4.6s you would need 44'" tyres

so you will be able to change both front and rear with the only problem that you have to change the front pinion flange? or does the 4.8 have the bigger rear diff?

I would like to keep the 4.6 diff gears if running up to 35's isn't to bad of a gearing fo it.

I had to change the front flange on a 4.3 centre from a GU to match my GQ tailshafts and the 4.8 GU will be the same I assume. The ratios work well with 35's and a 2.8 diesel but will be a bit different with a 4.8 petrol.
