For the people in the know, how many hours labour or even a ballpark figure should I expect to pay to get new chromo front axles and CV's and lockright installed with a full knuckle rebuild with wheel bearings and diff rebuild kit? I've got all the parts ready to go all bearings, seals etc and the axles, CV's and lockright just need them all installed. Hopefully getting done at a mates workshop but I might need it done before he is able to, in which case i'd like to avoid being ripped off by the many dodgey workshops in this town. If they over quote then i'll just do it myself.

Hey mate, jump on Auszookers.com there are a few guys up your way that will be able to help you out.
As for pricing. You would be looking at around 4 or so hours. You have to remember they have to set up the diff. Be sure they know what they are doing. With putting in a lokka in your diff I would look into getting a solid pinion space to replace to crush tube. Most of the time you will have to grind out the housing to get the cromies to fit.

The housing needs grinding really? First i've heard of that. My mate who i'd planned on getting to do it shouldn't have any dramas doing the job he's a good mechanic and experienced at 4wd's and zook's. I got quoted $1500 and over a day's labour yesterday over the phone and another guy who didn't have a clue so I won't be taking it to anyone who doesn't know the scope of the work. Might just have to drive the V8 round until my mate's ready to do the job.

i havent heard of the grinding of the housing at all dont think thats the case.I am about to fit my front locker and cromos,maybe this weekend and i reckon for me it will be about 4 odd hours not knowing greatly what im doing.It probably took me that same time back in the day to do my swivel hub kit n new axle seal etc too?

You do not need to grind the housing at all.
You will need to take the nuckle off to fit the cv in though.

Ah righto my mate is going to do the work and know's what needs to be done but hadn't heard of grinding the housing. We'll get the pinion spacer done though, should be able to get that done for nothing at work.

No grinding required. You might be confused with transfer gears or a different vehicle Dave.
Axle install, bearings, seals etc is easy. If you weren't confident you could've taken the third to a workshop and gotten them to do the diff centre set up but the rest you could do at home very easily with the right tools and a manual.

Yeah I probably could do the axles and swivel hub rebuild myself with a manual but it's peace of mind for me getting a professional to do it first and i'll watch and learn as I've never done it before or seen it done. I learn best from doing things so helping my mate i'll have it figured out for next time. Thanks for your input guys.

No I am not confused. I had to do a little grinding on the driver side. after installing them. They made a grinding noise on hard left lock. as I said you don't have to do it to all of them.
If I was ever to go back to suzuki diffs or get a nother sierra I will run burfield rings. For the $$$$ I don't think cromies are worth it. Sorry let me refrase that they are worth every cent but the shipping is what makes them a rip off. Standard cvs with burfield rings are strong enough for anything under comp trucks up to 33s. But that is JMO.
They are only $50 with shipping.

For the $235 US I spent with the exchange rate in good health I can't see a reason not to upgrade. I wasn't going to but needed to do the bearings and seals anyway and figured i'd be silly not to while it was all apart. And who wants to stop at 33's

Believe it or not mine is a daily driver, it gets less attention from the popo than my commodore which is perfectly legal other than being to loud. I drove the zook through a massive blitz of transport dept goons, heaps of police, sound testing equipment and even the shaker one night. One cop commented on how the tyres were louder than the exhaust and the guy who stopped me and took my breatho reading commented on the snorkel and tried to insult me with some "soft roader" comment (must've owned a bog stock cruiser) and then let me go. Seem's they're not too bright up here the powers that be.
But yeah postage was $180 for the axles, locker and diff rebuild kit. $792 all up. Got the swivel hub seals and wheel bearings off ebay.

Thats not to bad I guess. Just for the price nowa days its cheaper if you have the know how to just put lux diffs in.
You are going to find it to be a hole new world off road if you have never had a lokka. Are you going to be getting P/S or do you already have it? Without it your going to learn how to 3 wheel drive real quick. Or become Popeye forarms real quick.
Did you get ahold of any ofthe townsville guys off Auszookers? I am sure there are a few of them up there tat have workshops that would do the install much cheaper then a normal place and they know what they are doing.

I Fitted a set of spidertrax chromolies into wt diffs, had to die grind the shit out of the ends of the housing & knuckle for the bigger cv to clear everything.

I am no mechanic but i have now just finished doing this to my car,i done the swivel hubs about 1 year ago,kit was $140 n took about 4 hours for me out playing in the shed.
This week i have been out the shed each night after work puttin the cromos n locrite in my zuk along with new wheel bearings as 2 were totalled.i got ripped on bearings so that added $160 to the job.Id never packed n assembled a cv before and id never really packed wheel bearings properly either so it was in no way a rush job and i took my time,learning along the way.Probably put about 8 or so hours in it in the end with other stuffin round n problems i came across.Fitting the locrite into the actual carrier was about a 2 minute job the cvs took a bit of stuffing round,didnt know if my diff was a bit bent as i struggled to get drivers side in,so maybe some blokes have had to grind?but probably for that reason.SO give it a go mate,im sure you can pull it off.Hit up weaves off auszookers for bearings.
