BATTERIES IN PARALLEL

Post by fatassgq »

Can anyone tell me what the outcome of running a HCD battery and a deep cycle battery in parallel?

The auto sparky said it is ok to do but I want to know what it will achieve for example at the winch?

I have been told that running a winch off a deep cycle battery is a no no. But also have it on good authority that running off your starting battery is a bad thing also!
I have a deep cycle for accessories as I figured that I would need winch less than I would need to run fridge and accessories etc.

But I have the switch there to run both in parallel for winching.
So after all that shit. What will this achieve as far as amps/volts, cca etc at the winch achieve?

Any info appreciated.

OK, I'm pretty much making this up as I type, but here goes:

The biggest difference between the two styles of battery will be internal resistance, which is what creates the voltage drop across the terminals when you draw large currents. Starting batteries have lower internal resistance, so they can deliver lots of current. Deep cycle batteries (typically) have higher internal resistance (unless you buy REALLY expensive ones), and can't deliver as much current (which is why they generally suck for winching.)

Thinking about this, I'm guessing that the winch will draw bucket loads of current. The starting battery will deliver more of that current, but the deep cycle will deliver some, such that during winching the terminal voltages will be about the same.

This will work OK for a little while, BUT (there's always a BUT :D )

Because the starting battery is delivering more current it will be draining faster than the deep-cycle battery. Ultimately, the starting battery will be completely exhausted (bad - that's why they invented deep cycle batteries) and the full load of the winch will draw on the deep cycle battery (also bad - they're not normally designed for that...) However, I'm guessing (and I really mean guessing...) that somewhere before the starting battery becomes completely shagged that one battery or the other will overheat, and you should notice a problem. I'm also guessing that by the time you notice a problem, one or both of the batteries will have been permanently damaged.

Summary: Don't try this for winch challenge events, but for short winching operations, you may be OK. How do you use your winch?

Your theory is reasonably ok.
You should use the main starting batt for winching if your 2nd batt is a deep cycle. Then if 4by wont start jump from 2nd batt to 1st.

If 2nd batt is also a starting batt use that for winching.
Modern N70EX Exide Extreme batts (620cca/80amp hr) are good for starting/winching and have a minimal deep cycle capacity.
I use 2 of these.

Thanks for that Scott.
Yep that is why I ended up getting a deep cycle instead of a dual purpose type battery.
Being able to run the fridge etc for as long a time as possible without a problem was my first priority.
The winch on the front of my truck hopefully will not be getting a major work out and that is why I went the way I did.
My main concern was that if I did need to winch I would fuck my deep cycle.

Maybe I should just carry my other hcd battery with me when I go seriously offroad and swap it over if I absolutely have to!!!????

I'm running 2 deep cycle batteries ( EXIDE ), they a are linked together without a duel batter switch setup and have performed flawlesly to date.

They had a higher cranking capacity than the normal battery of equal size and came with an extra years warranty aswell..... they were $20.00 dearer ( each battery) compared to the normal batery.

So far I have winched 5 full cable lengths in a single recovery and the batterys still started the V8 ..... am I happy ???? YOU BETCH A :D
