Marine battery as a starting battery?

Post by TheOtherLeft »

Hiya all,

I'm looking into buying a new starting/cyclic battery. I currently have a Supercharge Allrounder which is starting to tire after 3 years.

I was thinking about buying an Exide Extreme but what about marine batteries as they are designed for high vibration and starting/cyclic loading?

Something like this: http://exide.com.au/products/marine.php

They seem to be a bit cheaper then the automotive equivalent in the same size.

What do you guys think?

Construction is between a starting battery and a deep cycle. Not quite as good at either, but not as bad as either.

I've never looked into it in detail, but I remember reading that marine batteries are designed to cope with the vibrations of bouncing over choppy waters, so cope with off-road abuse better than your average run of the mill starter battery.

Other than that, I didn't look at the link. :)

I don't have one as a cranking battery, I use it for my second battery for fridge and everything else.

Where I purchased it from, they said it was the equivalent to a 100ah but with a better cranking strength. (NZ70) From memory it is 650cc.

It is Century one purchased directly from them.

Never used one personally, but a few customers have sworn by them and request marine batteries because others have failed on harsh terrain (numerous trips across the Simpson and Nullarbor). Apparently they're the goods

Century Marine Pro 600, They actually crank about 700-750CCA! That's what I run as my aux too. I actually hooked my batteries up so they are in parallel when the keys on ACC or On. Turn the key to Off or Lock and the Marine Pro is the aux for overnight without draining the main.

Marine batteries are identical to normal batteries in every way other than more robust spacers between the plates to make them survive the constant rough treatment they get in a boat........ Thats it no other differences, and that comes direct from the manufacturer........
I asked this same question at a couple of battery places, and thats the answer I got back.
