80 Series Diffs under a lux truggy

I know its been done before but I cant find any real decent answers to my questions.

I can get hold of some late 80 series diffs with Airlockers pretty cheap and was thinking about putting them under my lux truggy. I will also like to use the 80 series steering in the lux as well to get power steering.

Plan is to go 4 link in the rear (may need longer uppers). Flip the radius arms in the front.

I would use the 80 series power steering box as well to make the steering set up pretty simple and tucked out of the way

What pitfalls can I expect from this setup.

I have had 80 series for years and understand the weaknesses of the front diff, but was wondering how they stand up on a lux truggy with 37 comp spec tyres and at this stage a 18r motor.

you will get a thousand answers, but honestly it all comes down to how you drive the car, nothing more nothing less. the only thing is, with the 18 r you have the upside of being able to drive it hard due to the lack of torque, as opposed to say... a gen3 another thing to be wary of is the pumpkin is not centered in the rear, not a huge issue but can be for some. other than the weak centre, it should be fine, afterall, there are a lot of 80's getting round with 80 diffs, and they work.

Pete, Go with a 60 series front as there are alot more options for steering as they use the same knuckles as hilux or put hilux ball ends on the 80 series housing.

iv read it on 4wd smacktalkin that if u want a compspec hilux, u need patrol diffs, and line lock brakes.
everyone knows patrols r the ultimate 4wd, so it goes without saying that their diffs are the best!

That's alright. Haven't seen ya on here much anymore. Thought ya had given up on the sport. ;)

Gave up competing Aaron and thought I had it out of my system. But a year on I was missing the social wheeling heaps. I started with a SWB hilux that I was going to restore,put a couple of lockers in it and just go drive it. But after stripping it totally down, the amount of rust I had to repair was too much, so now it's now just a floor, firewall and a heap of tube. Hoping to have it wheelable in time for Rhetts next thing out at Scenic, even if its still on leaves and J arm steering.

We will have to get out for a wheel when its done..............

OMG same people still beating the drum of the inferior datsun diffs..... toyota housings are stronger and dirty 30's are stronger than nissan cv's, and the 60 centre is the same in strength. so get dirty 30's for about 1100, a 60 diff for about 150, brace it for about 150 or 20 on the cheap, no gussets and you have a diff thats stronger all round for a grand total of around 1300 to 1500, considering most people are asking around 1300 to 1600 for a gu front diff that still needs bracing and definateley gussets, why would you bother with rubbing the toyota name in the dirt like that?

do you really want to pay more for a diff that is of lesser quality? you would have to be stupid or experiencing severe medical conditions to make that decision.

OMG your a tool hey. incase u havnt noticed, probably too busy sourcing facts off google but all the posts in here relating to gu or gq diffs arnt seriouse, have u noticed the :rofl: after the posts, if u did some more reasearch u would know who Greg is and his take on the whole nissan v toyota diffs, actually half ur statistics and info are probably from him!

i know who greg is , and yes some of my facts are from him, but also from buddy and common sense, i am sorry for not putting a rofl after my post, but i as with lots of others also have fun stirring the pot so i argue back.

That comment from Greg was directed at me and a conversion I had done years ago, and not at nissan diffs in general. My last comp rig was an 80 series and I blew more front centres than I care to remember. I grafted a GQ centre into the 80 front using a GQ centre, airlocker and machined 80 side gears. It was a pretty strong setup in the end, but I probably would not go that way again now. Greg knows what he is talking about and has been doing this sort of stuff longer than most of us, and someone who's advice is always worth listening to.

For the record, looks like I will build up my hilux front, or go 60 series front.
