drowned diesel blowing white exhaust

Post by buff man »

drowned my hj60 2h in a river crossing, up to the windscreen for 8 hours. got the water out of the cylinders and tow started it and drove home but very spluttery and tonnes of white exhaust. drained the tank and fuel system and put 40 liters in and drove for about 50kms but still spluttery like a petrol engine pissing a lead. any ideas?

I suspect you have a boat anchor.

You've lost compression in a cylinder, bent rod most likely. Just get another rod from the wreckers and slap it back together ;)
cheers Dan

 I too go with the boat anchor.

When you pull it down you will say OUCH :bad-words: #":+ :smilecolros: Lowdly.

You had better check the boxes and diffs as well.

If your SUPER lucky It "May" just be a damaged injector.
Waterlogged engines can blow a lot of white smoke from the exh (trapped in mufflers) for a long time.
Crack open each injector until you find the one thats got the miss.
Pull it out for a look see and swap for one next to it to see if miss moves. If it doesnt, aarrggh.

As stated above regrease wheel bearings, alternator, starter, uni's, change oil in diffs, xfer, gbox, front hubs, list goes on sadly.
A drop of water in wheel bearings or uni etc can bugger it a couple of months down the track without warning. (The rust takes off the hardness in one place)

Is it using/pumping oil too?
You could have stretched the land on one or more of the pistons.

yes bazzle the list does go on. all driveline oil was turned to cream as was the powersteer fluid. amazingly none got in the engine but it is getting new oil aswell. i think the brake fluid was spared but time will tell. lost dash clock, demister switch does not illuminate, alternater is dead, starter motor works every 3rd to 10th try, battery had 1.2v when it came out of the river but charged back up ok. drained about 500mls of water out of the water seperator. but...... the hunting bus lives on thats the main thing, now its getting a turbo and SNORKLE aswell as a WINCH and bar.
