just a few questions about my 40 series.

Post by 4x4joel4x4 »

hi guys.

just a few questions about my 1979 bj40 cruiser
it has a 4spd gbox and b series 3ltr

i have just put on some 35" tyres and would like to know if this
will put to much stress on my diffs gearbox and engine?

any input into this would be great.

also i have been thinking of dropping in a 5spd gearbox,
can any one recomend anything that adapts on easy, or can any one recomend any one on the sunshine coast qld that does this sort of thing?

thanks fellaz

hey buddy,

I run 35" creepys on my BJ40 with a B diesel and 4 speed. It does the job and runs fine, the driveline is definately up to the epic powerhouse 3L diesel  , Mind you I haven't given mine a hard time off road yet.

Swapping a 5 speed from a 60 series or a BJ42 would be ideal...

Seeing your tyres reminds me of a quote from pirate "friends don't let friends buy TRX's" (or whatever those tyres are...)

unless u find a 5 speed from a bj 42 youy will have to pull gearbox apart to change output shaft i believe as the b and 3b are different to fj 40 and even deisel 60 series boxes in that respect, power wise your driveline should be fine with your tyres,my old 3b struggled along with the original cheese cutters

ok thanks for the replys guys, the old engine just seems to get hotter now.

and yes if i had bought tyres brand new there is no way i would have bought these tyres. but i got them for $400 with eagle alloy rims off a random guy... talked him down from 900

what can i say the guys just loved money.

I've got 2 fj40s and I'm running 38s on both with stock running gear for several years. The bias ply 40 does get it's bearings wreck faster and there is a little extra wear an tear on them both but that's a small price to pay. I also crack speeds of 150 and do freeway driving. Don't be soft! lol 35s were big 10 years ago.. Now they are pretty much stock on any 4x4

Here is one of mine with 46's.. Drove for weeks around Sydney like this. Top speed 65 before the tyres squished up and rubbed

Those tyres are "Thornbirds". They have been stated as being the ugliest & most useless tyre ever to be sold by Interco

With 35's you won't really need an extra gear. The B engine just won't have enough power. My 3B with 33" Simex's can only use 5th down hill or on straights with a good gust of wind behind you. Shorty_f0rty would agree I'd reckon.
