Hey guys,
Seeing as the qld govt is cracking down on fourbies i thought this might be some useful information to those who are looking to get their body lift approved and cert'd.
I installed a 50mm body lift on the 4runner with a mate using polyurethane bushes with crush tubes and 8.8 nyloc nuts and bolts. Took about 2.5 hours which included drinking beer. Very easy process!!
I booked it in for an inspection before doing the work (as it was a 3 week wait for an inspection). you then have 2-3 weeks to get the car inspected once the mod is done.
I had to go to Darra Inspection Centre and this is what was checked:
They did a full roadworthy and then went over and checked the bolts. They were in a rush as they were backed up but they checked:
headlights/parkers/reverse/highbeams and my spotlights (to see if they were wired seperately with a switch)
wipers and spray
seatbelts
horn
indicators/hazards
looked under the hood and checked for spray on the underside of the bonnet
tyre tread
asked about my 2" suspension lift
Then I drove onto the rolling road to check:
brakes
handbrake
reverse with brake (don't know why)
Then i drove onto a moving block
shook the car side to side
shook the car front to back
repeated for the rear wheels
Then he checked under the entire car for any issues/leaks etc. The inspector checked the bolts, exhaust and a few other things but i couldn't see what he was doing (as he was under the car)
Pretty sure that was mostly what he checked
The process took about 15-20 mins of checking but i was there for an hour or so waiting and doing forms.
If they pick you up on anything you'll have a 14 day window to get it repaired in, otherwise you will be fined.
Make sure your car is immaculately clean and shiny. I did a huge degreasing underneath the car and sprayed a can of tyre shine underneath, along with all the trim and engine bay etc. Looked the bits!
Now I just keep the bit of paper in the glovebox and it's good to go!

Good info - good to know.
I had mine done in Qld 7 or 8 years ago, at Caboolture. Much simpler back then, although I got lucky - I turned up just as they were about to go for lunch, and wasn't on their list. When they checked, I was legitimately booked, so it was a Qld Transport issue, and they did the inspection. But since it was lunchtime, that might have worked in my favour. They told me that they wouldn't bother crawling over it with a fine tooth comb, because it looked well maintained. Lucky me.

Do you have drum brakes on the rear? Depending on how the shoes pivot, some drum brakes work much less efficiently in reverse than they do forward. When I was on my Ps I got to drive mum's LJ 1300 Torana, with 4 wheel drums. The bottom part of our drive was relatively steep, and trying to stop when reversing down the last bit was hard - in reverse, the brakes really were pathetic.bigcheese82 wrote:reverse with brake (don't know why)

haha u got away easy. i had to prove my suspention was 2'' (lucky it was new and still had part number on it) prove wheel track and size was in spec.(had no tyre card) they made me rip off my snake racing draglink and steering arm. had to fit refectors to my tray i made because the led lights wernt reflective enough, for those who dont know, things can be ADR approved but they are not necessarily ARD compliant . but they did let me away with my deafning exaust and rear auto locker and 31s

You're kidding!!
They must have had the hot coal pit waiting for you, to drag you over! I went through on my 31s at the time (which are still just above legal size)....
