Donaldson topspin cyclonic pre-filter

I'm confused.

I'm thinking I want one to put a cyclonic pre-cleaner on the top of the snorkel on my Paj (3.0 V6). But which one

The snorkel is from ARB, and the existing ram head looks a lot like one advertised as a Donaldson device. OD of the snorkel tube (measured with a ruler) is 78mm.

On ebay, there's this mob.

They list two 3" Donaldsons:

I think the bigger unit is too big for me, and the smaller (and cheaper) unit will be about the right size.

I notice that neither of them mention "top spin" in their advertising - is that significant?

There's also another mob advertising non-donaldson units for a similar price:

This one has no performance (flow) spec. Probably will flow OK for a 3.0V6, but I would prefer a number.

For $5x delivered, should I just buy the "Donaldson" and be done with it, or should I spend a lot more to buy through a walk-in shop, or should I simply forget it and spend the money on alcohol?

I've read lots of stories about whether or not snorkel top cyclonic pre-filters are good or bad at highway speeds. Does anybody (Ben?) have a link to a conclusive scientific study?

Anybody feel like sharing their experiences?

On a TD you will need the 10".

They don't mention "TopSpin" because they are the old type, not the top-spin type.



The only major advantage of the top spin type is you don't have to take the top off and manually remove the dust.

Cyclonic pre cleaners are worth the money. If correctly sized they should remove ~50%-70% of the mass of dust before it gets to your filter. Therefore they should prolong air filter life by a similar amount.

Donaldson have plenty of info and specs on their website, and they apparently respond quickly to queries. I would track down the part number you want and then find the cheapest place to buy it.

As Toaddog says - QLD diesel spares - and other places interstate like truckline? should sell the donaldson items at about the same price as you can get via the internet.
