Air locker assembly

Post by MyGQ »

hay guys.

I am doing a diff swap today with a mate, he has 4.6's and i have 4.11's. he wants them for his V8 and i want his for my TD42

To cut a long story short we are just swapping out rear diffs as we both have LSD's but he has air locker front and i am just running an open, i dried to convince him to give me the air locker setup but to no avail

to save a bit of cash i am going to install the Pinions into the 2 housings and put the crownwheels onto each center (put my 4.11:1 CW on his air locker center and my Pinion into his housing).

Now cause he has an air locker i want to get a diagram or something of how the airlocker center goes together specifically the end caps there you tighten them up, i don't want to remove something and not know where it goes. does anyone have this handy?

the air locker assembly is pretty straight forward, mark both caps so you know which is which. one side of the air locker will either have a snap ring you need to undo to get the seal housing off where the air line goes into or it will have 3 allen keys you undo them, then you simple undo each adjuster nut either side then take the caps off aand your air locker will come straight out, make sure you get the backlash right when iit all goes back together with a dial indicator, i think its .15-.20mm

Don't take the pinions out. Just swap the locker over.
Fit a plug back in the hole from the removed air fitting, and drill and tap the second housing to take the air fitting for the new locker housing, much easier than trying to remove and set back up pinions.

Cant the whole 3rd member just be changed over?
There both the same. So why bother screwing with the diff setup etc. When you can just slide the axles out and and unbolt them.
Then bolt into other housing, slide axles in and put the drive shaft back on.

old locker will have 3 allen kep bolt or new locker will have a skinny metal clip take that off with line attached. then the two bearing caps and the centre will be out. you will probably want to use some bearing blue or even tooth paste works a treat to check your preload (teeth contact) and if you have a dial indicator do your back lash your mate will probably want to keep his housing unless your going to drill a hole in the other centre for the air line.
