How to remove steering box out of Disco, thru top or bottom?

I attempted to remove the steering box out of my Disco from underneath the car and had no luck. Then I thought it might actually come out from the top, but it woud involve removing the aircon compressor and the like. Is there a trick I missing ????????

i had mine taken out by 4x4 kotara in Newcastle lost ph number but they took it out from the bottom dont know how though give them a ring they are very helpfull and would tell you of any tricks

It shoud be able to be removed from the bottom. have pulled out a couple of older style Rangie this way without too many hassles, although it needs a bit of thought and a bit od spanner throqwing in frustration!!

Have you taken the drop arm off? This makes life much easier!!

Also keep some beer handy, you'll need it after you finish!!

Landyman, I tried , tugged , pulled and pushed, it seems that the top part gets jammed every where, not enough turning space it seems.

That's sort of odd, but if you are having all that sort of trouble, you may need to do the aircon compressor removal. Just need to push it over, not undo the hoses.

Did you remove the front protection bar>? Stupid question, but that may get in your way (I seroiusly doubt it!!).

It's on a Disco I should ad not a Rangie. It seems to get caught on the chassis which I can't remove. I guess it can only come out from the top. And as you stated Aquarangie old son, It might indeed require the moving aside of A/c etc.
Anyway, I was replacing the seals in the box due to a fluid leak.
As I couldn't remove it I only replaced the bottom seals on the steering arm whilst it was in the vehicle.
The streeing arm shaft was in pretty good nick and it hasn't leaked for a week so fingers x'd

Yes, the steering box leaks can be a nuightmare to fix.

Always been a fan of that Lucas power steering stop leak. Don'
t let the name put you off, bloody goos stuff and swar by it to slow down or even stop not too bad leaks. Costs about $16 from Soupercheap these days I think (not too sure).

Maybe I was mjislead on the removal procidure. Noe from memory the Discos have bugger all space to work under compared to a Rangie!!

Lucas stop leak only fixed it for a few days then it started to leak worse, hence the seal replacement.

I put this in my leaking steering box on my old 84 Rangie, lasted two years and only had to top it up every 12 months. Wasn't even leaking when I traded it in!!
