Hilux 3L turbo install questions

Post by ae86levin »

I have done alot of research on the turbo upgrade to the 3L using the 2L-T turbo kit.
After finding a kit for a reasonable price I'm now looking at the finer details of the install.

My first question is to do with the oil feed to the turbo.
Most people seem to use the alternator/vaccum feed. I noticed what looks to me like another feed point on the block next to it - see photo.
Is the highlighted item a blocked oil feed that could be used to feed the turbo or is the way most others do it preferred?

Second question is to do with the fuel pump and the boost compensator
I managed to get a 2L-T fuel pump with a boost compensator as part of my kit.
My initial thought was that the pumps could be swapped but from what I can find on the net the older 2L-T pump doesn't have a tacho sender.
I have read that the boost compensator can be swapped with the altitude compensator between the pumps.
The question is how much of the pump needs to be disassembled to do so - is it the top cap and the diaphram assembly underneath or the whole body the compensators sits in that bolts to the main pump body? I have highlighted the cap I'm refering to below.
If it is the cap and the compensator workings can it be done while the pump is on the engine or does it require pump disassembly? I don't think I would be willing to risk attempting to disassemble the pump but swapping the compensators might be easy enough - any one who has done this care to comment?

Use the alternator/vaccum feed, The black hose in your pic is the oil drain line I'm sure. I would stick with your pump and wind the air mix screw about 1 1/2 to 2 turns. Depends on how much boost you want to run. I was running 15 psi and just tuned it by taking for test drive and seeing how much black smoke was coming out the exhaust. Never had a drama and pushed it hard most of the time.

Thanks.
I have edited my post as it wasn't very clear. I'm refering to the bolt sticking out of the block that I have highlighted red. Is that an oil feed point? I realise the larger diameter line is a return line.

I've been running a ct20 off the feed on my block for 12 months now so it definatley is an oil feed. Just unscrew the bolt and replace it with a fitting and braided oil line to the turbo. Don't have to touch the alternators feed this way.

As for your second question, sorry I can't help you.
I didnt touch my fuel pump after the install, just wound in the fuel screw roughly a 1/4 turn and kept an eye on the exhaust temps. Im only running 9psi of boost tho, wanted to keep the reliabillyty
It blows a little bit of black smoke when pulling away sometimes but hardly noticeable.

the oil gallery runs along the side of the block in a straigt line, you can pretty much draw a line horrozontal to that bolt, and it goes nearly from one end of the engine to the other. the things to knote however is that the oil between the filter and the frount of the engine will contain unfiltered contaminents from the engine and oil pump that may cause a block in the fine clearances if the turbo, in my oppinion the best point to use is the one located behind the oil filter at the back of the engine as it is clean filtered oil.

The Pump i would suggest taking to a diesel fitter, it looks like it should be a straight swap over for the top section of the pump as all L series engines im sure used the same core, with the exception of some 2L. a diesel fitter may be able to do it in a very short time, but you need to be verry careful not to damage anything, or get any dirt inside the pump, for memory anything over about 10 microns is to big.
