drip of oil

1992 4.2 EFI LPG and PETROL, NEW CLUTCH, (complete kit) new clutch slave, radiator, starter motor, alternator, new head and gasket set +bolts etc.
Now I have a show of oil on top of and around the g.box bell housing, and having checked that its not the rocker cover gasket, am I to assume that its the rear main seal?
Being 70, and now not so nimble, I cant see down between the engine and the firewall to view any sort of source for the leak,
experience tells me that any oil leak under or around there then it is the rear main, and the solution is to ignore it, until the clutch needs replacing, the trouble is I had the clutch replaced about 2 years ago and the rear main done then (along with the flywheel refaced etc), so back to the question, is it the rear main.
I change the oil every 5000kls, and it sometimes uses about 1/2 liter (between Melbourne and Tin Can Bay and back, or about the same to Hawker in S.A. and back)

rear main oil leak wouldn't make it to the top of the bellhousing. It would be the rocker cover or head gasket. Or possibly a welch plug/oil line if there's anything like that around that area.

Are you sure it's leaking, and not just residual oil from the (recent?) head gasket job?

g'day oldmate.
I first noticed the oil when I was greasing the front uni, and then dug out the gerni and gave it a clean and since then I have had to gerni it after every trip
It doesn't drip much onto the carport, but I cant stand the idea of something being"not right".
I have tightened up the rocker cover bolts, but I do have trouble reaching the back two, because of the air con lines etc
I might take it down to the dealers, but they charge a fortune (and my local is useless)

what "oldmate" said.. sounds pretty likely.. it cant be rear main though not if the oil is where you have said. try and find the highest point of oil.. could be welsh plug could be head. maybe drive to next workshop if your local one is usless. no point in throwing away money.

check the crank case breather hose is on properly, ....oil usually drips out of mine that is now positioned inside a chassis rail instead of back into the turbo.

double check rocker cover gasket.

thanks for the replies, I will whisk it down to the 4x4 guy in Frankston and see what he thinks it is
I tried to slide a clean rag down behind the engine between the firewall and itself to see if the leak was up high, but the old arthritis caught me out bugger!!!
Normally there would not be any drama, I would just let it be until it showed something more serious, but I have promised to drive across to Kalgoorlie to see my daughter, and I would hate to be caught half way there.
