td42 rebuild options?
td42 rebuild options?
in the middle of a motor rebuild td42.. currently running 190rwkw 30psi boost.. if anyone knows of a few ideas while rebuilding motor.. is it worth boring out slightly increasing cc's? or maybe alvin strutted pistions.. or changing cams? or different types of rings? is aftermarket anymore or less reliable then geniune nissan gear?
any help muchly appreciated.. as far as i have learned and read is you cant go past standard geniune internals... i really dont believe that at all.. surly theres td42's out there with different gear in it.

Re: td42 rebuild options?
From what I understand Nissan was pretty much the only company who turbo'd an engine without using steel ring lands in their pistons I could be wrong but it might be a starting point also I have heard coating the pistons ceramic top and jet hot the rest is also benificial.
Probably way off base this is just what I have heard.

Re: td42 rebuild options?
no worries thats awsome now i have a starting point. i will look into it and post results for anyone who may do same. thank you
Re: td42 rebuild options?
im currently doing the same thing but keeping it simple, ceramic teflon coated turbo pistons 30mm gudgeon rods and a new td42t head you can port the head for early turbo spool but need someone who has done testing on a td42 head and actually know how to port them to get benefits.

gq coil cab with stuff
Re: td42 rebuild options?
this maybe a stupid question.. how does porting head get earlier boost?
Re: td42 rebuild options?
less restrictions = more flow = quicker spool.THE-Burger-Ring wrote:this maybe a stupid question.. how does porting head get earlier boost?
thats the theory anyway, one single thing wont make a big difference,it takes alot of time/cash/mods to get decent power.
You cant bore these engines out the liners are to thin.
ceramic coat the piston crowns and the combustion chamber teflon coat the piston skirts.
Keford cams do one for the 42T
how much power are you looking for? what have you done already?

Re: td42 rebuild options?
190rwkw with 35's on.. thats current power. and plan on leaving it there but want the motor to be that little more reliable.
right now have 30psi, 150cc of fuel. custom made and tuned exhaust manifold. 600hp front mount intercooler. 2 1/2 inch induction pipes. dump pipe and 3in enhuast. and hyclone.

Re: td42 rebuild options?
I know its not a performance mod but i have allways found blue printing and balancing the motor allways makes a smoother even in diesels.

Its not cool, unless it's got boost :)
Re: td42 rebuild options?
i am definetly getting it balanced but not blueprinted.. the bloke rebuilding my motor says i will be wasting money. he says they are only worth while on motors doing 600 horsies plus.
i am actually new to balancing motors.. can you actually notice any difference?

Re: td42 rebuild options?
I will say a balanced motor does make a noticeable differance at high rpm,
when i rebuilt my old SD33T i got the rotating assembly balanced and did the rods and pistons myself.
All though this was to try and stop it breaking cranks but in the end it was decided that they are just poor design with 4 mains. But same old story,, was it the full rebuild that made it feel smoother or the balancing and new cam??

Re: td42 rebuild options?
Balancing the motor make the big difference of smooth delivery of power in the engine. You can be surprised on some engines the amount of balancing that is needed.

Re: td42 rebuild options?
Balancing and blueprinting an engine is a lot of work either way. Balancing means machining pistons etc until they weigh the same as well as all of the other moving parts that create inertia. Blueprinting is just going that extra step and is not worth the effort required unless you are talking big horsepower in race applications where longevity at full noise is required.

Re: td42 rebuild options?
If you plan on pulling the motor down I'd be balancing it for sure, from memory some of the rods in mine were up to 12 grams out.
Porting inlet and short side helps, Upper head cooling system for sure, I have a 650hp intercooler but still need more, (laminova?), custom plenum, .....all stuff to add power with out taxing reliability too much...bit of a trade off really you don't usually get power and longevity together.

Re: td42 rebuild options?
what kind of cooling system on top of pistons do you mean? simular to td42t?
my motor is getting rebuilt now

Re: td42 rebuild options?
we port all 4.2 ,4.5, 4.8 with all b4 for and after flow test if any one is interested have lots of experience on class winning trucks

Re: td42 rebuild options?
if you mean upper head cooling, its an external rail to remove the hot spots created when under heavy load. A port is cut into each combustion chamber water jacket between the glow and injector port.THE-Burger-Ring wrote:what kind of cooling system on top of pistons do you mean? simular to td42t?

there are a couple of good photos in a thread about it some where.
To keep your pistons and head cooler ceramic coating helps to keep heat out.
