Post by duncan »

Tried asking on a few forums havent realy got an answer back.

Can you run a high pinion front diff center in the rear with low pinion gear set in it so its running the way it was made to on the strong side of the tooth. This is for a hilux diff with an 80series front center cant see why you couldnt .

you can run the centre with the gears that are in it, but putting a low pinion gearset in it will not work.

I cant understand why the aftermarket industry hasnt made a hi-pinion rear diff to suit HiLux's. I'm sure that the product would sell, and would sure as hell save me a few tailshafts every year.

I agree would think they would sell like hot cakes.

Now everyone tells me no you cant do it but no one ever explains why.

Still going to strip a low pinion to see as was told by one guy thius morning that he had tried but the pinion wont mesh when it sits higher up still cant get my head round that one with out seeing it for my self.

Any other explinations as to why it wont work

Why dont you just put a 80 front diff in the rear ?

Already high pinion, and if it fits in the front of a hilux it will fit in the rear.

Save yourself the effort. It will like be trying to put a left hand threaded bolt into a right hand threaded nut.

Just put the 80 front in the rear. If you don't run huge tyres and hate the car it should be fine according to the US forums.

If you want more tail shaft clearance just rotate the diff.

The gear cut is totally different for a high pinion gear set. Trying to use a normal gear set in a high pinion arangement will never ever work. The gears wont mesh at all.

you can use an 80 series high pinion centre, with the 80 HP gears(be that OEM, or aftermarket with a different ratio), in the rear of your hilux. But as you say, it is driving on the reverse side of the ring gear, and therefore weaker.

thanks guys the rig runs 40s with 5.29s and twin cases with 4.7s in the front case dont normaly give it heaps so a high pinion rear might hold up for quite a while was just a thought.

Have read some build ups from the staes were guys fit high pinion rears always thought why when its a weak ,thought there may be a way around it

The other option that I have been toying with is to run our current centre upside down and then fit 2 gear portals to reverse the drive
