have a 4wd with lockers front and rear at a standard height in a extrene situation will end up on its side or roof first tine everytine unlike a vehicle that has a higher lift which equals suspension travels which keeps the vehicle a hell of alot nore stable whilst in a crossover or large hole on one side, if you dont agree with what i'n sayin please get a flex ranp, get a vehicle at standard height or 2inch lift and a 4b with a larger lift see which one goes further before things get hairy, i'n not disregarding lockers at all, they are great, but sorry i dont agree when you say a vehicle at standard height and / or with 2inch lift with lockers is as stable as a vehicle with a 6 or 7inch lift 4wdin,

If you took the full travel of the shock then we could just legally have a 2" lift, maybe a tad over, however the law is talking about down travel from static ride height. This means you must take the 1/3 measurement at nearly half the travel of the shock.

This means that it is illegl to lift your Patrol anywhere near 2 inches. Now please do not go and tell the transport department because they either don't know or they are gentleman. Lets keep everbody's head in the sand so we can keep getting our 3" lift vehicles on the road. (most of the time)

Hopefully the new rules will come in soon which give us clear boundaries however at the end of the day, the amount of vehicles we see lifted on the road will always be proportional to how much the law is policed.

I agree, seems we'd be cutting our throats if that's the case, but remember not all shocks move in the vertical plane, some are mounted at an angle whereby they actually compress or extend less as the suspension travels vertically. It's the travel of the axle downward until rebound stop that you have to measure.

By the way, what were the measurements of the standard shocks? Did you take the mesurements at full compression, standard ride height and at max extension? Front? Rear?

Seems to me that this sort of technical data should be calculated by someone who can engineer light vehicle modifications, say....an engineer? Not leave it "up to the owner of the vehicle to ensure it conforms to the code of practice" If it was like that you could just put longer shocks in????

how does lifting it 7" make it more capable? Why not keep it low, add lockers and gearing and it will out perform a massive lift 9 times out of 10
Maybe the guy with the 7" lift drives over bigger rocks then the guy who is at stock height. It's horses for courses. If it were lower the better we would all be 4WDing in lowered 4WD's. The guys competing in tough truck are bigger then you might think, especially when you consider the 40" + tyres.

I don't remember however say a Patrol front shock is about 500mm extended (they are a little less). You then divide that by 2 giving you 250mm. Then take 50mm off because of the loss due to the weld in the pins, the valving and needing to leave a little shaft in the shock, giving you 200mm of total travel. Say the shock sits half way through its travel at ride height. We can then assume the vehicle has another 100mm of drop. Divide by 3 we get 33mm of legal lift.

Best case scenario, vehicle is sitting with only 50mm of up travel and 150mm of drop at ride height. 1/3 of 150mm gives you 50mm.

It also says in the law that the rear of the vehicle has to be in proportion to the front so you can't go and give the vehicle a big lift in the rear.

Engineers had the so called last draft a year ago of the new laws and the document said it was going to take affect July 1st last year or somewhere around then and it was meant to be passed through parliament by then. I just hope they haven't got cold feet after the NSW government pulled that ridiculous stunt.

And now it seems to me that it is not only the police and transport department we have to worry about !!!! Took my car for a wheel alignment and wheel balance last week and today I get a notice from the transport department saying my car has been reported having a excessive lift and oversized tyres. The time and date was when it was getting this done ????? Am running a 4 inch lift and 33s. Have just been advised to get the car looked at and rectify any defects and that if it is reported again i will have to run it over the pits.

Dont know if we can name and shame on here so will leave it for the moment ! But was done on Sumners Road, Sumner Park

Is A GU wagon by the way.

No not absolutly sure just 99.9% sure as there is an axact time of the complaint. And it was in the workshop at this time and as I only work down the road 500mtrs I am sure I did not pass a speed camera. Just thought I would post as may be a thing that the transport department is asking tyre shops to do now ????

Your inability to produce the approval documents for the 2in body lift that you don't have could be a big risk. Not having a go, so please don't take it the wrong way but be careful with that approach.

If the DOT or the police are unable to say what the maximum figures are. How can you able to prove that your lift is legal?
How can they say that something is illegally lifted if they can not state how high the maximum lift is?

On the tyre size thing how does it work if your patrol comes out with the largest combination of 16 x8 and a 75 profile tyre and then you drop rim size to 15 inch rim and ? size tyre + the 15mm how legal would it be on some model i would think that 33s would be totally fine

tyre size has nothing to do with the size of the rim. The 15mm rule is about Dia of the tyre.
It is possible to get a 33" (838mm) dia tyre in a 15", 16", 17" etc upto 22" or what ever size rim size. BFG do 33" AT to suit a 22" rim.

There are "Vehicle Data Information" forms (form RVD1 - Road Vehicle Descriptor) that the vehicle manufacturer submits to the Australian Government - Department of Transport and Regional Development.

The information on these forms is what NSW RTA are going to reference with their new rego and vehicle mod requirements.

The Suspension Data section gives measurements from centre of wheel to top of wheel arch, for front and rear at; unladen mass, full bump, and minumum acceptable.

From the RVD applicable to Nissan Y61 wagons those measurements are:
Front, Rear
555mm,560mm (unladen mass),
515mm, 515mm (full bump)
542mm, 542mm (min acceptable)

Subtracting 2nd measurement from 1st gives 555-515=40 and 560-515=45

If you take 1/3 of those results i.e. 40/3=13.3 and 45/3=15.

Which is near as corresponding with what you get from subtracting the 3rd measurement from 1st
i.e. 555-542=13 and 560-542=18

So that is how much the suspension can be lowered, but is it how much you can raise

If you want those forms go to http://ols2.rta.nsw.gov.au/rvd/searchRVD.do

i heard a nice little rumour the other as coppers are throwing fines out like money atm in rocky to any 4wd drivers.. rumour i got told that gq mavricks come out at some stage with factory 33s on ti models or something so saying that.. if maxium tyres size is 2 inches over standard, that would make 35s legal on a mav? is there any truth to this rumour as it would be awesome if true!

Does anyone have any info on tyre coverage?
Interested in front more than top down coverage as I have a jeep and looking from front on the tyres are out there.

People, for . sake, stop speculating about what is legal and what's not.

It's all in here...

http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/safet ... eb2004.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Check your tyre placard and add 15mm to the tallest tyre size listed and that's all you're allowed. Ford Mavericks come out with a piddly 215/80R16 (29.54") tyre only. 31's are not legal on a maverick.
Don't take life too seriously...it isn't permanent.

Hi Guys,

I have a GQ PATROL SWB with 3.5'' flexy coil lift and 305x70r16 muddies and "NO" BODY LIFT. But the other week I was on my way to work and I was pulled over by the popo's, it seemed I wasn't speeding or under the influence of drugs or alcohol but this didn't seam to be enough for the man in blue, he was determined to issue me with a ticket for something. He didn't mind the lift or the tyres but to his understanding it had a body lift, I politely told him “that it didn’t have a body lift and that it was standard came out like that, the body mounts look like they haven’t even been touched since it was built”. But he wanted to give me a defect for it. Luckily for me, before he started writing the ticket he was called to a crash (unlucky for someone else) and I didn’t get anything. But I guess at the end of the day it comes down to luck and actually how much they know about what there defecting you for………..

Side note as well...I wouldn't try and claim you had a 2" suspension lift and a 2" body lift...the way they are regulating it is 2" allowed..total...so it's either 2" body OR 2" suspension...not both.
