Hey guys.
I have the drivers side hub apart, as the wheel bearings went on me yesterday(theres a story in my build thread about what happened).
I am up to the bit where you take off the brake rotor, but cant get the outer bearing out.
The 54mm nut, star washer, 54mm nut and flat washer are all out, but I cant get the bearing out, so I cant get the rotor off.
How do I get this bearing out???
I am going to replace the wheel bearings anyway, so butchering it out is a option too, even though I have tried already, with no luck.
I dont have access to a press or oxy, and the lux is hanging out of the shed door with the hub apart, so I need to get it fixed asap.
Please help.

You can't get the rotor off the stub? Should just come away, nothing but the bearing is holding it on.

Yeah, just the bearing wont come out, damn thing.

Just wondering, are the wheel bearings and seals for the LN65 the same as the ones for the 93 Surf??
For when I fit the new brakes.

try putting the wheel back on and letting it down on it and shaking the car. just keep the jack almost touching incase it pops and tries to fall

I got the outer bearing off, eventually. After alot of pulling on the rotor.
The outer bearing was ok, not great, but it was intact.
After I got the rotor itself off, the inner bearing fell apart, roller needles everywhere, the cage in lots and lots of pieces, and the race is stuck on the stub axle.
Crikey, EPIC bearing FAIL!!!

So I had to pull the stub axle off to try and get the bearing race off. Now thats stuck on. :bad-words:
Mrs D is getting me some new wheel bearings tomorrow as a Dads Day pressie.
But the Lux is sitting half out of the shed, so Id really like to have the stub axle back on this arvo, so I can put the rotor back on, so I can put a wheel on there so it can be pushed into the shed for the night.

Any ideas???

So what really happened was the inner bearing failed, wouldnt slide off the spindle making you think the outer bearing was stuck.. You forced it off, probably leaving the grease seal behind? The inner race is stuck to the spindle, its probably welded it self there due to the heat generated by the bearing failure.. If this is the case it might be quicker and easier to source a good replacement spindle to put the new bearings onto..

Yep, pretty much. :?

I have sone spares in the back of the shed, but they are behind and under lots of things that I now dont have the room to move and get out.

The inner bearing was rediculously farked.
I only put them in last December.

I had to do this on a friends cruisers once.

Grab a grinder with 1mm blade or even better a dremel! and be very careful

Don't cut all the way through to the spindle, You just want to weaken it so you can finish it off with a chisel and hammer, come in from one side with a chisel, it should snap and come straight off.

Linish the spindle with some fine wet&dry,

Inspect the spindle for any dammage, might need replacing anyway.

Regards getting the ring off the stub axle, If you have a very small cold chisel (cheap to buy) in your toolbox of tricks I usually give it a couple of good whacks after sharpening at 45 degrees or a little less and it spreads the metal expanding the ring while at the same time the shock of the blow loosens its weld to the axle. After this it usually comes off fairly easily, you can also use the small chisel to pry it forward a bit too being careful with the hammer.. Haven't done this On this particular vehicle but have used this method on several others.

Thanks everyone for the help and advice.
I gave up trying to get the bearing race off the stub axle, as it was going nowhere. I did think about grinding it though.
I put the hub back on the car and put a wheel back on too, then I pushed it out of the shed, and dragged my spare front axle out of the corner.
I started stripping it and got one side completly done, and started on the other side, but by that time, the kids were going to bed so I had to stop making noise.

The spare stub axle will be going on along with some new wheel bearings.
I managed to salvage som ok wheel bearings from the spare front axle, so I test fitted them to my new brake rotors, they seem to fit nicely, so Ill most likely fit the vented rotors and bigger calipers tomorrow while Im there.

I am uploading a pic of my failed bearing so you can see how bad it is.
I think I am very lucky to make it off the freeway, let alone making it all the way back home.

Heres a couple of pics for your viewing pleasure.
In this one, you can see the outer bearing still intact, pretty much. And next to tha is whats left of the inner bearing, above the screwdriver are the roller needles, and below the screwdriver is whats left of the cage. There was some more of the cage, but they were pretty much only splinters.

These wheel bearings were fitted mid December last year, the oils seals are still good, the gaskets are still good, the grease is still clean.
I have done a fair bit of wheeling this year, and yes, some mud too, but there is no indication of mud in the grease at all.
It could just be bad bearings.
Anyway, I count myself lucky that I got home in 1 piece and safely.

Mine shat themselves a while ago.
Replaced them with Timkin ones and they have been sweet ever since.
Bought the swivel hub kit from locktup while i was at it.
Maybe they could be very generous this Father's Day?

Mine did the same thing but on the way to taree at 110klm only problem was the brakes decided not to work as well as the front wheel was that loose it just wobbled in the calipers. So now i regularly check the bearings and make sure the fronts not getting too loose.

I got new bearings today.
The place that got the ones from before said they supplied NTN bearings.
They also said that if the stub axle was worn at all, then that could be part of the reason.
I dont need a swivel hub kit, it was all new went I rebuilt the front axle last December.
The bearings were a Dads Day present from my kids. So Im told.
