as most aware of my previous posts i have the TD42 in rebuild mode.. currently running 190rwkw.. as we all know there is next to no reliability with that sort of power in td42.. was hoping to get people oppinions on duramaxs? if anyone has done it? whats it roughly worth for conversion and motor alone.. what sort of power to the put out? and everything else i should know if i decided going that way? chances are i will stick to td42 and change internals but i am trying to weigh up options.. see whether or not its worth changing everything all together?

Allow around $35k for duramax. Could probably make your td42 reliable for that.
Just got my GU back on the road with the duramax. Awesome to drive, could never go back to a td42. But still in early stages of tuning, reliability etc. But so far so good. And I have approx 420 rwhp on tap at the same time as an economy mode. Possibilities are endless with these things.

Mmmm Thats a little more than I the early estimates. I Thought they where original talking under $25g, which when compared with a decent powered TD42. Makes the duramax worthwhile. But at an extra 10g, a moderate tune on the TD42 is worth it. Well for me it is when really I would be happy with the 150-170rwkw power.vanbox wrote:Allow around $35k for duramax. But the big question is are you doing it your self or paying someone i suppose.
For 35k Aussie dollars you could build an 650hp weapon for sure. But if you're only looking for 170kw you could easily make the 42T strong and reliable for $7 - 10k.

Having been involved with fitting these engines with heath, I can tell you there is a huge amount of labour involved, as well as a huge amount of parts. It all adds up pretty quick. And don't ring me asking how to do it either, You can ring me if you are looking for someone to do the conversion, or looking for a wiring harness to suit.
In comparison I charge $18000 for a LS2 swap, that will never have the economy or power of a duramax.

little off topic but are uses running prognostics on the 1000/2000 series transmissions. and for 35k are you getting allision doc with that for diagnostics purposes.

well look guys i a keep hearing people say for 10k you can make a 170rwkw td42 bullet proof... well i have a gq patrol that weighs 2.9 tonn. 4.3 diffs and with the 35's makes 190rwkw... Its pretty simple i cant afford 35k so those people who say its easy to bullet proof my motor speak up.. cos all the research i have done and motor rebuilders tells me i will roughly get about 100 000km to a motor and that includes, EVERything ceramic and teflon coated and port and polish. rings i cant seem to find any good shit.. con rods arnt going to make any god damn difference, water will still smash them. The motor breathes very well there is not restriction anywhere. I have never reved motor out behond 3500rpm. simply cos you dont need to. empty car with rear locker in breaks traction at 90km/hour. so i have never needed to scream my car to 5500rpm like some clowns do. i like 190, i just want to drive it with confidence.

i already have a workshop rebuilding it but i need more ideas to consider.. as far as i am concerned there really is not much more you can do bar smash the air and fuel in. then minus reliability.. in a perfect world i would sell my misses house and buy a durmax lol.

I think Heath is the one to talk to about td42 reliability, pretty sure he spent about 20 - 30k on one and it still ended up blown up. Not really sure on the details though.

Dont take my comments of $35g as being not worth it or it can be done cheaper.

I was more meaning that for me that may be a little out of my price range. I was initially looking at a break down of cost of a full good rebuild of a td42 is around $12000, I think that was with a upgraded pump. Then I was working on $10 000ish for a turbo/intercooler install.
With those figures I thought an extra 3g for the duramax hell yer spend the extra. But at $13000 more. I cant afford it. Hell I cant justifie $22 000 for a good TD42 setup now
But if I had the coin. I would be onto it like a fat kid onto a donut.
Just for interest. For the approx price of 35g. What kind of adjustable tuning does that give you. From my research its possible to get the power adjustable upto 150hp from stock very easily. Those kind of setups, are they possible to have a power mode then just flick a switch and it changes to a economy mode.
Was just thinking for a tourer. I would be doing lots of kays on transit sections whether it be high speed tarmac/HWY of fast dirt like the Birdsville Track etc. These areas the std HP would be way more than ample. So and economy tune would be great.
But then deep or soft sand in the Simpson or climbing long hills with a load on board. It would be good to be able to flick a switch while driving and getting a power setting.
Is this possible on your STD install. Or would that require additional goodies to be brought.
Also how is the shifter setup?
Does it look like a std Auto shift P-R-N-D-5-4-3-2-1 or is it like a shifter on a Falcon where it has P-R-N-D then the + - thing off to the side and just a tap either way manually changes up and down the gears.
Tried looking for Pics of a Chev setup but cant work it out.

I have a standard tune of around 300hp with 5 progressive settings to 420hp at the moment. The standard auto transmission is good for around these figures.
Im getting another allison built (over built) to handle more power. The stock standard motor should be good for up to 600hp at the wheels without any modifications, just a the right tune. I have seen a stock motor make 970rwhp but threw a pistion out the side of the block eventually.
The biggest restrriction will be airflow. There isnt much room under the bonnet, and I only have one air intake hooked up. Its too restrictive on standard tune. Im trying to put together another air intake system in order to plumb a secondary box in.
As for auto, I have a shifter from a wrecked ZD30, which goes PRND21. The allison is setup like, PRNDM1 (M being manual mode). So when in M mode, I have a toggle switch next to the shifter to go up and down gears.

As far as I know, all chevs have column shift autos, so you might have trouble finding pics of their auto shifter layout

Hey Steve do you think it would be possible to run the 4.8 shifter with the proper tiptronic setup (you know the type that you just push the lever to the side and go up or down)

have not actually seen one to be honest, however we have looked at the ford tiptronic shifter which can't be used. Problem is that you need to pull the shifter cable down to engage M mode, where the tiptronic shifters just slide across without moving the shift cable.

Have seen a couple of cars with M mode below D. But they shift left-right not forwards-back. I was just trying to say ,If you are going to get a job done, go to the people who have done it before.people who have found out what the issues are by testing them under extreme situations. & rectafied any issue that might arrise.

I know what you mean there. I would love one and I think a GU wagon with a blown 3lt would make a real good platform. But the needing a Body lift is of concern. In a GQ it doesent bother me. But I think a GU is much better with only a susp lift. In Qld, there is no issue with body lifting a GU with airbags you just have to go about it the right way. You have to apply in writing then get it checked over the pits. I went through this process with my series 4 gu wagon and it is fully certified with the stamped letter of approval in my glovebox.
