Expression of Interest everyday 4x4 winch challenge

Post by pommy86 »

I would like feedback and or expression of interest of a winch challenge for the everyday 4x4 driver.
The format I thought of would be the same as tough tracks on a points system from 0-1000 and from 500 point mark through to the 1000 point mark that there could be incentives, like gift vouchers which don't necessary have to be a 4x4 outlet and this takes out the stop watch.
This would be for the 4x4 which has a everyday of the market shelf winch and not just a standard high mount winch.
The thought is just off the shelf products that you get at ARB, TJM, IRON MAN, OPPISITE LOCK etc., shocks, springs, similar to everyday road going 4x4.
The tracks don't have to be over the top nor vehicle damaging, just like going to a park with mates and driving tracks as you would.
The thinking was that between the 0-1000 you have 10 winch points but you have to do 5 of them with the winch anywhere between 0-1000 point mark and where you do these will be individuals choice.
There would be a small entry fee but affordable.

A softish non damage event for beginers/standard type rigs would be great.

I cant help wonder how many of your standard 4x4's that people drive to work in every day, have a winch tho ?

I drive my Pootrol every day, and i go off road more often than most other people i know with registered 4x4s, i dont have a winch ,nor do i intent to get one as i don't need it for what i do.

I like the idea of this but what sort of regulations would there be? Just wondering?

i.e. Standard off the shelf low mount winches with rope?

maximum 33" tyres?

a class for locked and unlocked vehicles? unlocked vehicles would be winching more than locked vehicles or dont even worry bout it?

Id consider getting a winch if there was a similar comp in Vic that I could enter my daily driver occasionally into.

I'd be interested for sure. We need an entry level winch series, nothing too crazy based on having fun and winch safety than spending tens of thousands of dollars on a rig.

What an awsome idea.
Upto 33" tyres, and 2" lift. Possibly locked. Minor Mod Class
And upto 35" tyres and 4" lift. Locked. Mod Class
With hi and lo mount winches and no motor upgrades. In both classes
Keep it affordable and keep it simple.
Count me in,
Cheers Jeff

No we havent spoken to any one at suspension stuff about any of this at all.
The area for start would be well around The out skirts of brisbane, at a number of parks or private land.
I am gathering as much info and feedback from everyone in regards to this.
As there has to be alot of thought into this as well, as this is has been approach a number of times i know.
See the words winch challenge will have to be looked at carefully too so again thought has to go into a suitable name.
I know this is not going to suit evryone but much care will be taken in to try to cater for many.

Kind regards Chad.

Just remember to take into account the PL Insurance, which at the moment is between $1500 & $2000 per weekend event. The onus is on the person who collects the money etc entry fee.

You are more then welcome to use the Rules of the XWC if you wish, there is no point in trying to reinvent the wheel.

Also make sure that you make the rules as per what you want. It appears that a lot of comments that you will get will be from people that have no intention of putting their entry fee up when you try to put this together.

I should know as it has been impossible to get enough people to enter a standard winch challenge event for the person on a limited buget.

And again, what has Suspension Stuff got to do with this event anyway????

I would think that if it has anything to do (which it has not) with anyone it would be with myself (XWC) or Stirlo (SSS) as we are the only one's running a true winch style event in the SE Corner.

Cheers

Perhaps this is a indication of the lack of standard cars that come fitted with a winch ,or do you think low entry numbers are accredited to other reasons ?

I wonder if a event could still be based around standard type trucks, but insted of just a "pure" winch challenge , it had the winch challenge as only part of the comp?

This idea would also allow people "without" winches (like me) to be eligible for competition/entry, and would open the event up for bigger entry numbers to help cover costs.

The winch will be apart of the challenge, but will cater for those that dont have a winches, to generate more interest from from the gerenal public.
Thank for the feedback and the input to this thread.

One thing i've noticed about the "everyday daily driver' style of competitions that have been held over the years is that people don't seem to get it that if you want to race or compete you're going to get damage. I'm guilty of this as well so i'm no saint, but people don't seem to realise that "racin's wreckin". Sure, if everyone turned up daily driver cars that have nice paint then you could build tracks that suit and everyone has a nice (read - tame) time. But it only takes one or two people to turn up with a car that is stock but otherwise a pile of crap, and drive the living bejeezus out of it and it ceases to be the nice social drive type event that you planned it for. You end up with folks with nice cars getting miffed about tracks being too hard for their cars and the dude with the sh*tter laughing because the tracks are easy and he doesn't care about one more ding.

I found out the hard way that nice paint and comp trucks don't mix, and i also know that the first ding is always the hardest (as those who saw me lose my cool at scenic rim will attest - many apologies again to those who saw). Now of course i'm one of those who drive the wheels off it and it's getting a crapload more dings and scratches in it.

I'm not saying what you're planning is a bad idea, but just be ready for the whining and tears from those who don't realise that when the flag drops the red mist comes down and that means damage. Entry level competition seems to be best left to club style events so that people can get a taste for what it's about in a friendly no pressure atmosphere and until they can learn that "racin's wreckin"

just my 2c

Id say what rockcrawler said sounds very realistic, perhaps some sort of judged points system for car cosmetics could be taken into account, so a straight and tidy car could score/start with more points to begin with than some beat up old shi77a ?

Also perhaps could some obstacles be laid out in a manner that requires navigating across them skilfully and touching with any part of the car (other than tyres) would result in a penalty, this would reduce the benafits of having a car that does not mind crashing through everything ?

this sounds like a good idea, i think that a major penalty system for any car that sustains damage to panels would eliminate those who just drive thru everything regardless would keep it honest (certainly would count me out) . also cars should be unlocked therefore the terrain would not have to be as tough to make them winch. cars with lockers could have them disabled so they could still be used and this would be checked by officials at the start of each stage. keep it as a winch challenge only to start with there is already plenty of comps for vehicles without winches why compete with them. have heard alot of people talking about this style of event around the camp fire in recent times u can buy a cheap winch these days much cheaper than lockers and a great way for begginners to start out not having to compete against the big dollar boys.

SO GET TOGETHER WITH SOME MATES AND GO 4X4 DRIVING FOR THE WEEKEND. IF YOU CAN,T GET TWO OTHER CARS GIVE US A YELL AND WE'LL SEE WHAT WE CAN DO

i don't think that would be a good system...what about people who might not be able to afford to go out and buy a nice shiny 2010 model lux/navara/whatever?? some of us have had to buy older cars, and older can quite often come with a few dings here and there...i dont think it would be fair to penalise someone just because their wallet cant afford a "fancy" rig.

No offence mat p but this is what i'm talking about.

Although mat, they're not expecting you to buy a new car with no dings, they're talking about testing your driving skills so that you don't put any more on that aren't already there. Just levelling the field for those that want to test their skills and not their car.
