Hello all. I was just wandering what may be the problem with my Suzy?
I went for a 4X4 trip today with a couple of mates to Ross and Locke just South of Cairns. And I noticed whenever I was on a straight and began to speed up that the engine would just randomly cut off and die for a brief instant. It usually happened when I was accelerating or giving the engine a bit of punish.
It does not always happen but on my way home I noticed that it begun to happen a little bit more often (OR maybe i was just imagining it?) but this cutting out is rather dangerous in the instance of crossing an intersection or smashing up a muddy hill?
Any feedback at all would be greatly appreciated.
I have a 1991 model Sierra, it has been crashed, thrashed, bashed and rolled, but she will still get me up any damn hill I point her at! And that's why I call herSuzy.
I'd start with replacing the fuel pump. I've seen and heard of lots of fuel pumps giving trouble at around the age of yours.

Ok. Well I will give that a go. Thanks... Do you know how much they usually are? And which is the best to get?

About $130 genuine. apparently the non- genuine ones are rubbish (and that came from someone who sells them)

It can be your leads too mine would die when accelerating or when under load and are alot cheaper to replace. Have a look where they are touching and see if there are any white marks where the current could be leaking or look at them at night time and see if there is a lighting disco on your engine. Fuel filter could be full of crap or water too.
The fuel pumps usually leak oil when they are buggered and yes stay away from the non genuine the pressure output is too high for the carbs and will flood them.
More Suzuki parts going to the big Suzuki Heaven in the sky!

Which leads r u referring to? As in the Spark cables and the Distributer cable?

I've got the same drama with my 91 too!
I replaced the whole dizzy and leads and it still does it.
BUT the fuel pump idea seems to make sense!!!
Big thanks!
The best thing about having 2 cars, is when you stack one, the other breaks down in sympathy! Can I bum a lift?
Diagnosing these random problems can be hard. I've been involved in a few cars that had all sorts of terrible drivability issues that seemed electrical.... and it has been the fuel pump on more than one occasion.
I don't have a budget solution sickzuk1, but if you can't afford a fuel pump you can't afford plug leads, cap, rotor and then a fuel pump when the problem doesn't go away, although most old motors will run heaps better with fresh leads so it's not a total loss.
IMHO, the drivability problems from plug leads will be worst at low revs/high load rather than at high revs. Fuel pump issues will occur after transitions in revs - as in OK for a little while, then a big die once the bowl is empty, then a cough and a cut out.
Car will normally idle and free rev fine, even with a very poor fuel pump. (same is true for plug leads though, although a miss at idle and doughy off idle response can be leads)

Ok thanks Stevie that makes heaps of sense. I thought it sounded like a fuel problem.. Umm it is still driveable atm untill i get enough dosh together.
As long as i dont feed it! Haha D: I broke my centre locating bolt yesterday. How long do they usually take to replace?

Just u bolts, gclamp the spring pack back together, and put a ne bolt through, but make sure it clears both holes in the bottom plate and the diff mount.
I can't remember how to do it!!! I watched my brother do it like 4 or 5 years ago. But I can't remember which one is the center locating bolt! Ok.. So i have pulled the top face thingey off at the bottom of the gear stick.. And I am looking at the thing where the gear stick first enters into the very top... And there is a bolt directly to the right of it. And a bolt directly below it (Towards where I am sitting). Which one is it? I am pretty sure it is the one on the right but i dont want to undo it in case it is the wrong one. I would get my brother to help me but he is too drunk...

Put an electric fuel pump in it and it will be a lot smoother throughout the rev range. Also you would be best to not keep driving it if it is a dieing fuel pump. I did and ended up with one of the most stressful drives of my life trying to get the car to a point where it was safe to leave it and get my other passenger home. A good electric pump will set you back $100 but you could probably get them cheaper.

What is the difference between an electrical fuel pump and a normal one? Wont this just cause more issues if something went wrong?

Ok... Well I replaced the fuel pump and the engine runs a shitload smoother now! Which is awesome. But now instead of the engine cutting out all through the entire rev range it only cuts out when the engine begins to struggle, like at a low rev range. For instance if I am cruizing along the road and change from 4th to 5th a little too early the engine will just jump around and die... So what else could be wrong?

Spark plug leads. From the dizzy to the sparkplugs, and from the coil to the dizzy. Get new ones. They will make an improvement to any old car with old leads.
Hahaha ok. I was gonna say! I was like why on earth would I replace the fuel leads?!? Haha ok. And how much are leads nowadays?

Cheaper than a fuel pump. Just take your leads into a auto spares joint, and they will find you a new set on a rack. Alot are universal, and remember which way they go!
Ok Thanks everyone. I replaced the leads and now my Suzy can actually accelerate!!! And it has like almost double the noticeable power! Thanks heaps!

There is only one problem.. It stalls easier hahaha. As I found out today during a little drag race at a set of lights...

I just took it for another drive.. And it is still playing up!!! The Fuel Pump And new Leads are helping it heaps. Its performance is awesome!! But... It is stalling WAYY to easy!! Like it is ridiculous! I will be stopped, and I will have to give it about 3,500 revs to start and even then the engine shudders.

It idles normally at about 400 or 500 revs... Idk it is weird.. It doesn't matter how much I give it, it will still almost stall.. Idk what could be wrong with it..
