99 gu 4.2 turb D missing first thing in the mornings? help?
99 gu 4.2 turb D missing first thing in the mornings? help?
hey guys got a 99 gu 4.2 turbo coil cab ute and in the mornings when i first start it it miss's for around 3 minutes then runs fine it does this everyday only just recently bought the ute and the owner told me this upon sale. i have since serviced it and the fuel filter was horrible full of sludge. so my questions are?
1. what do you think the cause of it is?
2. does this model motor still have the little gause filter in the fuel pump under the inlet line?
3. would the glow plugs have anything to do with it.
im hoping i dont need to do my injectors but that may also have to happen was hoping someone could let me know if these pumps still had the little gause filter in them so i could make that a starting point. any help is apreciated guys cheers '' tim

probably looking at a glow plug problem.
pull them all out and check their resistances.

Re: 99 gu 4.2 turb D missing first thing in the mornings? he
i glow mine up to 3 times if its been a cold nite. some1 told me its just a gu thing??
Re: 99 gu 4.2 turb D missing first thing in the mornings? he
mine does he same thing but ive been away most of the time for the last few months and havent had a chance to be near the car to check it.
I think its a glow plug thing as it came on during winter, and doesnt happen when the car is first started in the afternoon.
My parents live in a warmer climate and when i stayed with them it didnt do it at all even with 6am starts etc - just didnt get cold enough to worry it.
so my mind has decided its glow plugs/plug but havent confirmed with diagnostics yet.
but i think its likely to be 1 totally not working as glowing multiple times does not effect it at all.

hey guys thankyou for the replys. mine does the exact same thing as you's mentioned first thing in the morning miss's like buggery for around 3 minutes then comes good and for the rest of the day it will start fine with no dramas but once its been sitting all night it will miss the next morning when i go to start it.
on a side note i also removed the gauze filter out of the diesel pump and it was very dirty had lots of fuel filter element fibres stuck in it. so cleaned it and put it back in throttle was alot more responsive after this.
if i can find someone locally this wkend with new glow plugs in stock ill change them and ill let yas know if it makes any difference..

Might find it could be valve stem seals leaks a bit of oil down into the cylinders mine dose the same thing blue smoke oil
Re: 99 gu 4.2 turb D missing first thing in the mornings? he
yeah my 00 ute does is too. Wait a few seconds after the glow light goes off. I wait tilll i hear a tick from somewhere lol and then its usually sweet

Mine does this too. Only since I had the turbo fitted though.
Mechanic says it's because the timing is moved and the fuel ratio is ramped up to accomidate the turbo.
Which means until you get oil through the turbo so it can spin up to balance the air / fuel ratio and some heat gets into the block to assist with ignition, it will run pretty rough.
I have found repeated glowing does help though.
I suspect a factory turbo would make a TD42 behave the same way too.
So I wouldn't worry too much.

My brother had this problem in his 99 GU. Replaced the glow plugs - still no good. Replaced the fuel filter, still no good. He checked the gauze filter on the pump i think, but it still made no difference.
He ended up getting onto someone that got him to blow compressed air back up into the part where the fuel filter goes - apparently there's a valve or needle/seat assembly up there that gets a bit dirty/gritty. As far as i know, this fixed the problem. I'm sure he'll post up with more detail if he sees this thread.

Check the fuel tank breather is not blocked, overnight will draw fuel back into tank causing fuel starve on first start. Also a loose fuel line will draw air into the system. Had a similar problem and this is what I found. I used to loosen the fuel cap, air would gush past into the tank and the revs would pickup within a few seconds. A simple check before replacing glow plugs etc.

For what it's worth, mine used to have a VERY minor miss on very cold mornings, but not very noticable.
Replaced glowplugs, injectors, turbo and injector pump (not because of miss) and still used to do it
