ROCK TYRES (31x10.5r15)
Hey all
I was almost dead set on the General 'New Grabber' but its looking more and more like they wont have them in 31" until mid next year... so, i'm looking for recommendations.
Terrain here in summer is:
- Smooth Granite
- Shale
- Dried Clay (powder on top, compact underneath)
- Gravel
I will be running them all summer and they don't need to be great in mud, as i have simex ETs for that (winter).
I'm engineered for 31x10.5 so lets not get into "oh you should get X in a 33" etc =) lol

Re: ROCK TYRES (31x10.5r15)
i thought that, they are a very closed in pattern for a muddy... how much did your 31s cost each?
these all look pretty similar and like thy'd be ok for rock:
Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac / BFG KM2 / MT Baja MTZ

Nankang Mudstars, I've been very impressed with my 33s on the GU and they are very cheap.

Have you looked at ProComp Xtreme all terrain or Extreme muddy

Re: ROCK TYRES (31x10.5r15)
interesting - three i definitely handnt thought of. Grimbo - how do the nankang go on shale or loose surfaces? by example my simex just sit there an spin on that stuff not getting any grip or forward momentum at all.

Is there anything that is still 31 ish but narrower ?
On slick hard surfaces you want lots of ground pressure.

Re: ROCK TYRES (31x10.5r15)
only if i go a 16" rim... which i dont really want to. something like a 235/85r16 = 31x9.25 which is pretty awesome - but not common.

Re: ROCK TYRES (31x10.5r15)
I also have the 33in Nankangs and have been really impressed with them. I had Simex MT's on my old Sierra, and in loose stuff they did just spin helplessly. The Nankangs seem to break traction, then find grip after a few spins in the loose stuff. In all honesty I think they perform better than MTZ off road, and like Grimbo said they are cheap. The only problem is they are undersized, so size up the 33's if your keen. I paid $170 each for mine a few years back.
Re: ROCK TYRES (31x10.5r15)
I have wrangler MTR kevlars on my hilux in a 31x10.5 and they are a brilliant tyre
Re: ROCK TYRES (31x10.5r15)
i considered the wrangler MTR kevlar, but arent they too voidy for decent grip on rock and shale???

Re: ROCK TYRES (31x10.5r15)
the KM2s cost me 320ea in 31.
+ a free black max air compressor (but thats ended now i think).

Re: ROCK TYRES (31x10.5r15)
so $320ea is RRP yeah?
Im thinking the KM2 might be the way to go - proven tyre and i've seen them in action on a few different suzukis.
Now to get the price down =P

They are primary designed for rock, they designed them for moab sandstone and granite and the orginal design was one of the first of its type providing an aggressive radial tyre for rocks with mud as secondary
Re: ROCK TYRES (31x10.5r15)
x2 on the mtrs,
I have the old style on my hilux, and from all reports the new style are better.

Re: ROCK TYRES (31x10.5r15)
How do all the tires above compare for wieght. I know the old wranglers were nice and light. Hows the new one compare?
Its a wheelbase thing
Re: ROCK TYRES (31x10.5r15)
have not held a new style myself yet but i agree the old style is a light tyre, hope the new are the same.

this site: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... ith+Kevlar" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
says the 31x10.5 is 50lbs (22kg) for the Goodyear and 45lbs (20kg) for the KM2...
i can't find any comparison to my current or previous tyres though - being cooper STTs and current simex ETs.

yeah... but not many places list the weight of tyres so they came up near the top of a google search.

Going to give Ryano a call tomorrow about a price on these - where else have people got their goodyears or KM2s from?

Called Ryano (Fourbys)
KL71's were half the price of the KM2 and MT/R. And the price on KL71 is just awesome!
I think its a no brainer... gonna give the kumhos a crack =)

Re: ROCK TYRES (31x10.5r15)
When I was hunting around for new tyres (in Perth also) the Goodyear MTR's were always more expensive than the KM2's in my size. I'm either going to go KM2 or save a few hundred and get Maxxis Bighorns. Would like MTR's as mud has been very unappealing to me lately but find it hard to justify the premium over the other brands.alien wrote:oh ok - i had no idea! i've actually not seen any in perth either so theyre either poorly marketed or overpriced... lol

You gonna order from Ryano? When I rang up I was told unless I was ordering the likes of Simex or 35"+ sizes it was cheaper for me to source locally.alien wrote:Called Ryano (Fourbys)

Re: ROCK TYRES (31x10.5r15)
i am indeed.... he's still cheaper with shipping than locally - mention you're an OL member. He's also lurking in this thread =)
As an example he got my previous tyres (simex ETs in 31") to me cheaper than perth4x4 could by almost $30 a tyre or something... that and he's good to deal with!
I'll actually be getting tyres and rims at the same time too.

Re: ROCK TYRES (31x10.5r15)
i have had the mtr Kevlars on for a while now and was supprised on how quiet they are on the highway, and mine havn't chipped that much at all,
i thought the tread was too aggressive when i first got them but once i took them bush it changed my mind, remember from the photo you see the tyre with no load and at a fairly high pressure so the void will look large, the grip is feels sticky, can post pic's of the them on my car if you like..
