Maybe we should go by the words of the man who designed the world's first ute, that was Lew Bandt who was a designer at Ford Australia in 1932.

It should really have a steel roof too, but the rollover bar on a Sierra replaces that, which is why my LWB softop is registered as a 4-seat utility.
Sooo - chop off the tub and it is a 'pickup', a 'trayback' or a 'flatbed', but it is NOT a ute.

That seems a good point, 11_evl, but who said a ute can't have seats?
The licensing authorities in all Australian states clasified the Sierra as a ute with seats, maybe we should argue the toss with them.

Sorry but that is incorrect, at least in Vic, I have a SWB soft top, with the rear seats in it was classified as a wagon, I removed the rear seats, took it to vicroads and it was reclassified as a "G" class ute (and I can now park in loading zones )
My take on this argument is quite simple, if the rear is designed to carry a load, it's a ute, if it is designed to carry passengers it is not a ute.

Designed to carry passengers? Well they put in reinforced mounting points for a pair of lap belts, does that count??
My rear seat has been in the shed for years, it's a ute. But licensed to carry four people. Mind you, I'm still chuckling at your experience of it being a 'wagon' if it has a rear seat.
It's obvious, the Suzuki Sierra was too complicated for our licensing authorities, they never figured out what it is either!

Yes, the first ute was 1934 and it was a Ford.
First Holden sedan was 1948, officially called the 48/215 but aka the FX.
First Holden ute was the FX series of 1950.
In case anyone is interested, the ute's factory model code was 50-2106.
This page has details and photos of the first ute (funny, the brochure said the ute was a 302 - model of course, not the engine!)

Yeah I knew the holden was later model hence I thought it was strange. I am not clued up on my fords, I didn't know they had a Aussie car so early. I also didn't know the FX came in a ute, I thought the FJ was the first holden ute. Learn something new every day...
