ok, any advice very appreciated read all sorts of websites like ih8mud.com, cruizers.com, pirate etc etc
bought a 80 series rear diff assembly with locker that will arrive next week and want to fit this myself to 73 mwb. same as 75
so, what do i need to do. as far as i can tell i should have full floating rear axles. can i leave wheels on and unbolt hub and then slide axles out. then unbolt tailshaft, drain oil and unbolt diff assembly????
put back together new gasket needed? do i use gasket goo as well. longer bolts for diff assembly. just rebolt new assembly, slide axles in ....

the cruiser has a full floating rear axles and the hilux has semi floating
for the cruiser you wont need to jack it or nething just undo the nuts that hold the axles in
tap the cone washers out
slide the axles out
the cone washers may give you some grief, i find a few good taps on the side of the axle flange with a hammer or a small socket to fit just over the cone washer and a couple of tapes losens them up to get them out

80 series locker
Bluey when trying to remove tapered colletts from rear axles donot hit the flange at all as this will only damage the seat
Undo the nuts but do not remove them
with a drift hit the end of the stud and the colletts will pop straight out
Dont be scared to do this as you will see that the studs have a curved end for this reason
If you go hitting the side of the flange you will distort the taper and then the colletts wont reset correctly (causeing studs to brake and fall out )
The 80series locker will go straight in so long as it is a 4.1 ratio
The job should only take about 30 mins

sorry, you've lost me there. not sure which bearings, drive pinion bearing or bearings either side differentail case/ring gear? oh, and is detroit locker
shouldnt have problem here, 80 diff has 4.11 and so does mine (standard diff so this meant to be what i have )
was re-reading manual today. so you undo nuts, and then tap end of studs with drift (this is a brass bar?) and hammer. i remember smacking hub on front of hilux when replaced wheel bearing. took some beating 30mins to do whole job would be sweet
didnt think this would be much of an issue

What i was saying is the lsd centre is interchangeable in the two diffs if you use the bearings that are with the lsd ctr (as toyota made changes to the sizes) Being a detroit, you could put it in the 73 centre and off you go.
This involves swapping over the ring gears and re adjusting the side gears to get correct backlash....fairly straight forward.
I have put a 73 ctr in a 80 housing, but never the other way round. Would think it will be a tight squeeze getting the larger ring gear in the housing. Might have to open it up a bit with a grinder.

i was under the impression what i have bought has ring gear fitted. or am i completely arse about here? you could be right about backlash to side gears, didnt consider this . is this hard job/possible without some special toyota tool or other.

What this is is a diff centre not the whole carrier. You will have to put your ring gear on the detroit and set it up. You wont need the solid pinion spacer, as changing the ctr and readjusting the backlash is all that is reqd. The pinion doesnt need touching unless you have problems with it leaking or it is in need of new bearings. All you need is a dial indicator....put it together and have a diff specialist set it up 20 minutes tops to do this simple task or bring a slab over my place and i will put it in for you.

ok, spoke to 80ute couple of days ago and was not just locker, but entire diff carrier. pinion flange thru to ring gear. this is what i thought
so, arrived yesterday and quickly did trial fit of driveshaft to pinion flange and no problems there. then drained oil, today remove axles and removed existing diff carrier and bolted in new one with locker . put in new oil and we are away again.
probably took me about 3 hours, never done this before. took round same time to undo oil filler nut
so tip for anyone else, remove oil filler nut first, then drain nut. if filler nut wont come off, at least you can still drive the car
anyway, car now drives like it is on rails, feels awesome. have noticed no noise from the locker, slight on off power tight corners. cant wait to test it out in the bush
