what chainsaw to buy for camping & 4WD trips

A mates old man is a retired Stihl dealer, he said the even number saws are the best i.e. 032, 066, 088 etc...odd number says are of a lesser build, i.e 017, 027 etc...but still a good saw
I have an 017, an old 032 farm boss and a jonsered 077. The farm boss would be around 25 years old or older (dads old saw), starts after a couple of pulls if not started for 6 months, when warm its first pull every time, great saw for general use.
017 is handy for small stuff, jonsered for larger(75cc). When i have money to burn its atleast an 066 or 088 magnum for the big stuff. Get something around 50cc plus.

well you may have to look for a second hand one of those....very soon they will no longer be available to us.... epa etc has forced a change in design... look at the stihl 441, Husky 576xp...these are strato type 2t motors...that use fresh air charge to help with cleaner buring emisions...computer controlled carbs are already here.....

like I said earlier if looking for a good strong light saw...50cc class and look at Husky 346xp and dolmar 5100s...

I sold my stihl last year for a low price to a bloke who needed it more than i did, and when it came time to replace it i was on ebay and we laughed and joked at a saw that was some cheap brand named Baumur AG, so i said bugger it, lets give it a go its only $100 loss if its no good, it was 62cc came with safety gear files etc all for $70 i won the bid for, postage was $30 from memory and it has been used very hard since on all camping/shooting trips (once a fortnight or more) that we do, cut trees off the road, firewood for camp, home etc and it hasnt missed a beat at all.

Now i love stihl, but $100 saw has lasted me over a yr and is still going as strong as the day i bought it.
Cant complain at that eh?

Has anyone had any experience with Shindaiwa? I am looking at the 446s.
Seems pretty good, Japanese made, all aluminium case and the Australian distributer is here in Melbourne.
I haven't used one, but from all reports they do seem pretty grunty. I am comparing it to the MS250 Stihl, which seems pretty flimsy in comparison.

Any thoughts or even better, first hand experience with them would be great.

Shindaiwa have a good rep. I find them a bit rough around the edges as far as fit and finsih but they do hold up....

are you sure it not a mag case??? most pro grade saws run Mag cases....

comparing to a stihl ms250 isnt really fair as its not a pro grade saw....but if there the same $$$ then maybe it is and the shindiawa wins....

Sthil 009 gets my vote they are awesome little saws if you can get one second hand. They dont make them anymore. They dont have any special features like anti vibration or easy start just a good basic powerful little saw that were only about $450 brand new

all you big brang blokes aren't going to like this but I brought a chainsaw from Bunnings for $135.00 and it's f'ing great for camping.

it's an ozito petrol saw with a 12" bar, I find it to be big enough for any log that I will be able to lift onto the fire. With everything else you have to take with you camping the last thing you want is a big cumbersome chainsaw.
it's compact enough to carry inside my toolbox box, along with a 5 litre jerry can and all my tools etc. being in a galv box the petrol fumes stay in and don't stink out the car. the only downside to it is it doesn't have a cover for the bar, but there are plenty of homemade solutions for this!

and for $135 and a 12 month warranty, if it dies after 13 months it's cheap enough to go out and buy another.

the only downside to it is it doesn't have a cover for the bar, but there are plenty of homemade solutions for this!

You don't even need to waste your time making something - you should be able to pick up an aftermarket cover for $15 roughly.

dads had a poulan for many years and so far the only problem has been a bent bar. Personally i just got a mcculloch m4815. 18" bar. Starts great and build quality is fantastic. Definatly dont need a bigger bar than say 16 - 18" for camping or 4wding.

yep just another wanker running way more bar than needed to make him feel "big"

put that husky in 24 inch wood and it would still hand it to that stihl...both running same bar and chain...

regardless of those to saws....who the hell takes a 076 boat anchor as a 4wd trip saw???? what a waste of space, and weight when a pro 70cc saw would kill it.

if the 50cc class isnt enough saw. Look at husky 372 xp (not the new xtroq) or a solo 681....both very very strong saws.

the stihl 460 is pretty good, but hard to come by new
