Brake Upgrade 1990 80 Series

Post by Grylls »

Hey Guys,

Looking at doing an upgrade on the brakes of my 80. Its a 1990. I have 15's on it and want to keep it that way. I've heard that I should be fitting later discs, backing plates and callipers on the front with the 100 series brake pads but what about the rears? What can I do for that?

Any help would be great,

Cheers
Ryan

from memory if you want to run 15 inch rims you have to leave the rear brakes as standard

15's won't fit on the rear with the later brakes. 15's will fit on the front with later brakes, but only with more offset rims or spacers.

Given the age of it, you'd probably get a brake upgrade just by overhauling the entire system. Also make sure the lspv is adjusted properly, especially if there is a lift involved.

I upgraded my 92 diesel model brakes. Unbolted and rolled in a front end from a 94 model petrol (swapped them).

But found in the 94 petrol after the swap. The brakes where rock hard and awsome. But the diesel brakes are still soft and spoungy. Are the cylinders different between petrol and diesel models?

As mentioned the rear bigger brakes dont fit 15's. But you dont need them as the front does 90% of the braking.

also something to remember is that when upgrading the rear brakes the caliper is the same it is just the backing plate which spaces the caliper to fit the larger rotor

I was going to say, I would not worry about the rear. For the above reason, and the fact that it does next to no work!

Thanks for all the replies guys,

I'm running 33's on just a set of sunnies. Will these rims have enough offset to fit the newer brake system to the front?

I'm thinking if I just upgrade the front callipers, backing plate and put a set of slotted rotors on the front with the 100 series brake pads and on the back just put slotted rotors with new 80 series pads then it should be a lot better.

Just need to know if the sunnies will fit on after all this work.

Also will I be able to fit the standard 80 series rims that come on the early models over the new brake system as well? I dont want to have to change it all back to standard when I go to sell the car down the track.

so is that why i'm running 15's on later brakes on the devil?

it's close and i had to massage the caliper a tiny bit but it's doable.

having said that, there's no point because the fronts can't be done that way no matter how much you massage the caliper.

I had a set of -45 offset 15x8 inch sunny rims on my old 1991 80, with the larger brakes and rotors on. I ditched the backing plate, rather then putting on the later one. The other option is to cut the backing plate to fit the rotors.

I think the original rims are -20 or -25mm offset. If you have the original rim on the spare tyre you could measure that.

yes it is doable with big offset rims and a grind of the caliper....

a mate ran 15's on his to... then he put new pads in the rear brakes and then the calipers hit his rims lol

i'd say the master cyl/boosters are differnt between the early model and the later models

factory 80 rims are -16 and and factory 75 are -22 _-25 and factory nissan is 0 offset

the front will fitt with your standard rims but the rear you need to grind the callipores as that is how i got mine to fit with the factory 15 inch cromys that come on the 80s.

that worked for me but now i run the 16s as i found it handled better . but that is just wat i did and it works

80 series is 0 offset and 60 is -20 offset. Confirmed by about 4 tyre shops when looking for new rims for the 80
