80 Series help

I have had my fair share of Patrols and Suzuki's and the wife has warned me that if I break her Patrol she wants an LX470 to replace it.....so I have been looking for a bush car....

I have found an early 90's 80 Series standard but........

Car is low kay 1hz N/A with a few good bits but....

* Second Gear crunchs when going first to second and also a little going 2nd to 3rd.
* rear main is leaking..
* power steering box is leaking
* intake manifold is leaking
* front diff knuckles leaking and probably needs bearings
* also seals are gone in the arbs lockers and are happily pumping oil out the solenoids.

What would be the damage on the list and what would an 80 series standard be worth in GC.

Is it something to stay away from or are parts should I say it cheap to acquire?

Repairs are going to be fairly exxy.

For a roadworthy you will need to fix any of the leaks.
Depending on how many ks its done you can either ignore the gearbox situation until it shits itself completely or bite the bullet and drop in an exchange gearbox and probably a new clutch while you have the motor out to get at the rear main. The crankshaft probably has a groove in it and may will need repair when the new seal is put in. Budget on a new clutch at the same time if the rear has been leaking for a while and use genuine seals and good bearings.

You have to weigh up how much it would cost to buy as opposed to what it will cost to fix these things. You might be able to get away with just doing the seals as required but if you are looking for reliable for out bush I would be looking for a vehicle in better condition.

If you can get parts at the right price and you have a well equiped workshop and know what you are doing then you can do it a but cheaper. If you are not and have to get a mechanic to do it then you will be paying fairly big bucks for it all to get fixed.

You would be looking at 3 grand for a reco gearbox and clutch fitted. Axle job could run as high as 800. Steering pump 500.

Easy to see why it's for sale. I'd say it's worth all of 4 grand max, and I'd say it's fairly typical of a cruiser that old. One in good condition would only be worth 6-7

rear main depends on how bad leak is but usually dripple a little bit rebuild kit for power steering is 80 bucks or a brand new pump 400 on ebay as for gearbox does is still crunch when changing gear slowly does it have thin oil in it
93 RV, 5 in tough dog lift, dobinsons shocks and coils, PA, dual fuel, many many oil leaks and a ton of character.

if so theres not a great deal of money involved in that

rear main is only a few dollars, just a pain to put in. IE: a hoist would be handy
power steer exchange box would be a few hundred
intake manifold would jsut be a gasket, again probably only $50?
full front end rebuild would only be $200 - $400 depending on how friendly u are with a parts dealer
lockers will quite happily pump oil out and still work.. I couldnt stop my rear from doing it so i got an ARB purge vavle, no more under bonnet mess now and still works fine..

the crunching gearbox is VERY common for an 80, MAY just be a matter of some decent oil.. a lot of people run castrol VMX? and have good results.

but if u have to pay someone to do the work then it is gunna cost a fair bit to fix up!

Don't be too complacent about the gearbox. If it's crunching or hard to shift there is something wrong with it. Certain oils might make it less obvious, but it is certainly not a fix.

x2 on Cranky's assessment, not a lot of $$ but a fair bit of work.
Comes down to how much time do you want to spend working on it?

early 80series with 1HZ and some gear arent exactly hard to come by, I would probably keep looking.

Early 80series gearboxes are known for a notchy shift, especially downshifts from 3rd or 2nd.
I was about ready to do a rebuild, and changed the oil to Castrol VMX-M, made a huge difference. Its chalk and cheese. It went from being almost imposssible to get 2nd at times to being totally fine.
Still slightly notchy due to inherant issues with the synchro rings
