GQ rear lights out

Post by Nelso »

Just recently I had pointed out that my taillights on my GQ go out when I put high beam on. I also just recently realised my driving lights no longer work either. I haven't had a chance to track down the problem yet but has anyone got an idea of where to start?

Sounds like your driving lights are trying to earth through the taillights (effectively running the bulbs in series and at half the volts). Sounds weird but I've seen weirder. Check the earth on your spotlights and that might fix the taillight problem at the same time. I always run my spotlights' earth to the body, not the bullbar or head light.

Also, silly question, your spotlights do run off their own relay switched by the highbeam right? I've seen spotties wired directly into the highbeam loom which is a no no.

I quickly checked tonight and the taillights don't work at all. I still have brake lights, reverse lights and indicators, but no taillights, high or low beam. I checked the fuse and it's fine but it was too dark to start chasing a short or a bad earth.

The driving lights have power from the relay but neither is working and again it was too dark to start chasing why. They are earthed to the body and have their own power through their own relay and have been wired that way for over six years so I don't think it is a problem with the way they are wired up but is most likely a bad earth as they are both earthed to the same point. I will have to try to get time when there is still light tomorrow to start chasing the problems. :? I hate doing electrical work. :x
