D4D tapping sound

Gday again,

I have heard from a few people that after 100,000 kms in the new model hilux's hearing a slight tapping noise between 2500 and 3000 rpm is a standard thing, Toyota reckon its a software upgrade to the CPU, however that might just be them wanting more money from me as its out of warranty.

Just curious if others have had same issue and how they might over come it, i have fitted a roo systems chip with a 3" mandrel bent exhaust. The vehicle was also dyno tuned when these were fitted.

Sorry i forgot to add that this is only when the engine is cold.

Injector. They always do them, a poor spray pattern will make the engine knock when cold.

I don't think they're cheap. Ask your Toyota dealer for out of warranty assistance, you may be surprised.

What he said ^^^ it is supposedly a common problem due to the poor quality of our diesel in australia

Regarding the software upgrade, it might be that they introduce another short pulse of fuel before the main jet, they usually have one or even two short bursts of fuel before the main pulse when cold. This is to stop the cold start rattle on modern low compression turbo diesel engines. The software upgrade may make it have 4 or 5 pulses of fuel per combustion cycle.

We had the cold knock on our Prado. Took it toyota, they reset the computer and it was fine after that.

Funny, Toyota down here aren't so helpful. They insist "it's all in spec" but the motor sounds like its going to blow up when cold...

i wouldnt reccomend getting ecu remapped.....a couple people that have done it say that after wards, the tapping is gone but they have less power and increased fuel consumption.

my d4d only ever gets tapping/knock when it damn cold outside (winter mornings) and i jump in and drive straight away.....hardly ever do that.

i always warm the hilux up for 10 minutes before driving anywhere, and always use caltex voretx premium diesel....no problem so far at 75000km...touch wood.

the new map must retard the timing
"less power" is that all the time only when cold or at particular RPMs loads etc

ive heard from several people that have done it saying they were not happy with their hilux's performance at all after the ecu re flash. all the time.
