So i have been thinking about getting a 80's series cruiser or a 90's prado.
i have been slightly leaning towards the 80's, because there is more of a range of after market goodies...
now my questions are: i want a diesel, but these new carbon taxes are scaring me .. with most petrol 80's coming with LPG is it safe taking it off road?? and is there room with the LPG tank to have a sub tank installed?
its going to be a daily, but a weekender at sometimes...
Personaly i would go the 80 series over the prado but thats just personal taste... A few of my friends are running 80's and they realy go well off road. As to your gas question.... if they were dangerous to run in an off road vehicle they would never be in them. my 40 has run gas for 15+ years off road. Since she is carby not fuel injected the pressure alows me to run very easliy off road... I prefer gas off road as 1 it's cheaper, 2 my old girl doesn't splutter when on a steep angle as she does when running unleaded.
Get all the info you can as every ones taste is different.. then make up your own mind.

No issues with either in keeping the main tank and putting the gas tank under the back in place of the sub tank. You just need a spare wheel carrier for the 80 series. If you are using it offroad, go the 80 series. I'd buy a diesel, the petrols stuff the heads on gas (valve seat recession).
Yep, drr is right about the gas stuffing the heads... when i first bought my 40 the previous owner ran it totaly on gas and the head required a complete rebuild. at the time i had gas valves, guides put in and had it xrayed for any cracks or defects. since then i run it on unleaded at least once a week and have put on a upper cylinder lube kit. whilst gas is cheaper to buy. you must take precautions to make sure it doesn't stuff anything as gas burns hot and dry not like unleaded or diesel ..which keeps everything moist and lubricated..... when i get my next 4x4 it will be diesel.....

I wouldnt be too worried about the carbon BS either. The ranga in the top job wont do anything for the next 12 mths and will get booted out soon after so nothing will happen with it.
Go the 80. Finding a TD is hard work and its cheaper to buy a 100 series petty which are a better car again and go great on gas
i was always leaning towards the diesel, but with so many dual fuels on the market, i thought i would ask the people who know best
im not looking for a 4bie where i will go out to the bush and find a track the looks like it hasnt been used for 10 years and go down it, ... 1 i wouldnt have the slightest clue of what i would be doing and 2 i would get stuck lol.. but in saying that i would like to know for my own piece of mind that if something came up i know that the 4bie would be able to handle it.
Then my serious suggestion is to do some off road driving courses or join an off road club. if for nothing else if you do find yourself in a situation that requires some off road driving at least you will have an idea what to do... having said that ... my Dad bought himself a gq patrol years ago with no intention of ever going off road but to use it as a tow vehicle.... he still did a driving course just in case.... he said it was just as well as his first trip out with the van had him helping someone else who had gotten stuck...
If youve got a 4x4... better to learn how to use it rather than have no idea.. when you need it most...

bzuko. what state are you in maybe i can help point you in the right direction. as to clubs or recomended driving courses in your area.. in Victoria i know of quiet a few... clubs and off road driving courses that are realy good and can help you if you are a complete novice all the way through to instructors level driving courses...

P and L do a driving course just on the other side of the Black spur... plus i am sure if you post up the question.. some one on your side of town can put you on to clubs and courses near you...
