Are all 4.2L GQ patrol Auto's the same? (mine looks stuffed)

Post by toy77 »

Hi there,

I have just lost reverse in my patrol. It is like another neutral.

Im thinking it will be pretty serious, so am considering getting another box to go in.

My patrol is a 94 injected model.
Did the autos change through the range?

I have found a 89 model one for sale.

cheers

You haven't dropped a bush out of a linkage have you?

hi,

no idea,
it drives fine forwards - but does have a light knocking/tapping noise when going very slow.

The auto tranmission specialist jumped in it - tried everywhere - ie betwen park and reverse and between neutral and reverse looking for it to grind or move or something...

Could a link bush cause this?

Cheers

The trans just may be gone but it's worth a look, a $2 bush is cheaper than the alternative.

in reguards to your question yes they did change through the range

the early ones (from 88 to about 91 i think i was) had a different switch setup. the early ones only had the power switch on the t-bar

the later ones have a Overdrive button on the t-bar and a switch in teh console that has Auto/Power and Hold. these are a better one as you can controlit a bit more.

Thanks for that mate,

Do you know if the box is the same and the controls different, or if the actual electrics are different.

Ie are they the same unit, but the later one has more control via the auto computer. i guess what i am saying is if i hook up an earlier unit to my controls would it have the same fuctionality to my current unit.

I think the box is technically the same yes, but the ECU and the wiring is different, not 100% sure if the connectors from the old box will plug into the new one's ecu. especally since the newer ones were primerally hooked to EFI engines and they have a comminication path between the ECU and the TCU cause both need info from the TPS and kickdown switches.
