why isnt my diff straight
i have just put second hand springs on the front of my hilux.when i first put them on the passenger side sat 2 or 3" higher than the drivers side so i took them out and swapped sides, now it sits level but the drivers side wheel is about an 1/2" closer to the back of the guard than the other side :
Re: why isnt my diff straight
The drivers side springs should be stiffer to account for fuel tank, battery, and driver all on the one side. Thus new springs are marked left/ right.
The second hand springs are prob sagged, there is a few brands that can sag up to 2" just on the drivers side.

Re: why isnt my diff straight
thats why i thought it was sitting higher on one side, and swapped them around but why does the drivers wheel sit further back than the other side now and how can i get the 2 front wheels to sit even
Re: why isnt my diff straight
measure how far its back compared to the other side, weld up the old hole in the spring perch and re-drill it to suit

WHAT? No don't do this!
Are both springs fitted the same way around? Military wrap to the front of the vehicle.
Re: why isnt my diff straight
dont what me mate,
if the diff is back more on one side then the other why wouldnt you, its simple cheap and easier the chasing up another spring, that could be wrong

Wow, you're a live one. Answer this for me. Why do you think the diff is out on one side?
XJ33: Are they raised springs to replace your stockers? Do you have an adjustable torque rod or a stock one?
Re: why isnt my diff straight
Are they both front spring packs, not one rear/one front by mistake? And are they both out of the same donor vehicle?
Don't take life too seriously...it isn't permanent.
Re: why isnt my diff straight
WHAT? Don't do this, every one knows it's better to cut the spring hanger off and move it forward1/2 inchreaper01 wrote:measure how far its back compared to the other side, weld up the old hole in the spring perch and re-drill it to suit
Wtb, 105 series rear tyre carrier, alloys and tyres.
Re: why isnt my diff straight
I think ray is on the right track. your torque rod/diff locator if standard may pull the drivers side further rearward due to the lift. get an adjustable one or remove it all together.

I was going to say that I know Ray and he has NO IDEA what he is talking about. As if you would try and do it correctly!
When my springs were the wrong length I cut and shut the chassis to correct it. Had to re-do engine mounts too, cause the engine then ended up crooked.
The body is crooked a little now, but the diff is straight as bro!!
hands and mums dont count!!!
Re: why isnt my diff straight
What you do then is loosen off the body mounts and pull the body back straight with a ratchet strap and weld the body on solid. Anyone knows that.

Everyone knows the body is too thin to weld to the chassis. I was going to cut and shut all the body mounts next.
You have to do things properly. Welding the body on, is just a lazy mans way out!

Re: why isnt my diff straight
Couldnt you just drive into a solid wall on the side that is too far forward to push it back enough so the whole thing sits straight again??

Re: why isnt my diff straight
just make sure you put a tyre inbetween the font bar and wall. the last thing you want to do is scratch it

Would be nice to hear back from the OP on how he went. Shits me how most of these blokes never reply to their own help thread!

Whats wrong with just using the ratchet strap to hold the body in position?
Re: why isnt my diff straight
I just cut 50mm out of the middle of one of the leaf springs and welded it back together.bj on roids wrote:When my springs were the wrong length I cut and shut the chassis to correct it.

Too much wheel spacer, and too much air under the tyre, right before it landed on something.Z()LTAN wrote:why isnt my diff straight?
