4.2 TD GQ ute, over heating??????
g'day guys,
just recently boaght a gq ute coil cab, its fitted with a safari turbo kit, witch means it has a front mount intercooler the size of tassie on the front, now its running around 14psi. and runs 4.66s and it gets along like a jet plain but my only drama seems to be is its getting hot under load.
now im toying with the idea of placing a bonnet scoop on and chopping down the cooler but also i wont to get a radiator biuld maybe ally??? also ive heard theres a upgraded water pump for this model too???? i just wonted to know witch ways more bennaficial as the rads about $850 an the water pump i hears round $500 has anyone faced same issue??
cheers justan.

Re: 4.2 TD GQ ute, over heating??????
Is it chuffing out plumes of black smoke? If it is, wind the fuel back a quarter turn.

Re: 4.2 TD GQ ute, over heating??????
The more fuel you give a diesel the hotter it gets, being rich is not always the 'safe' option.
With Diesels Rich=HOT
With Petrols Rich=Cooler

Re: 4.2 TD GQ ute, over heating??????
a lot of gq td's suffer over heating when fitted with an A/M turbo kit.
id suggest a radiator upgrade asap, a much thicker tripple core copper rad can be had for under $500. Or around the 1k mark for good quality alloy stuff.
id steer away from the cheap alloy ones though, a lot have issues with cracking.

Pumping water faster wont always lead to better cooling, either.

Re: 4.2 TD GQ ute, over heating??????
ive got the same set up,my gq has overheated for years, ive replaced everything from radiators to water pumps all with genuine parts, nothing worked in the end i talking to red devil radiators they told me there radiators would fix the problem, it did now towing temp doesnt go much over 80 degrees before it was 120 or 3 quarter on car gauge. by the way i have tried 3 other brands of radiators before this one i hope this info helps
Re: 4.2 TD GQ ute, over heating??????
My TD42 gets to 3/4 and sometimes hotter on long steep hills and it's N/A.
I've flushed the cooling system, new thermostat, put a new rad in it and it still does it.
I just have to go a little easier when on long hills.

Re: 4.2 TD GQ ute, over heating??????
Towball, have you been playing in some muddy, silty water lately? If the silt get in the fins of the rad, it sets like....well dry mud. Anyway check that isn't your problem. Takes a bit to hose it all out if it's been in there a while.
I had my 75 series running 23 psi with a huge front mount cooler headlight to headlight, big winch and spotlights in front and it never got hot at any speed. Different vehicle and different turbo I know. Before that I had a 45 series running a falcon 4.0 litre (a conversion I highly recommend) that I used to cane the wheels off, the only thing that got it near hot was damn silty mud in the radiator fins.

Re: 4.2 TD GQ ute, over heating??????
Do you still run the air con condensor?
We ended up putting mine under the tray with a thermo, one less hot thing for the air to pass through on the way to the rad,

Re: 4.2 TD GQ ute, over heating??????
I always had troble with mine overheating till i put a set of statsman twin thermos on instead of the viscous fan , and a alloy rad, know it gets no hotter than half in summer boosting up a hill,
around town dont even need to turn fans on unless it sits idling for a long time.
